Cut An Ice Cream Cake

Use a warm knife to slice ice cream cake.

By serving an ice cream cake, you can combine the best of both desserts -- cake and ice cream -- into one delectable treat. Because this kind of cake typically has layers of a baked good and layers of ice cream stacked together, you will serve it frozen. Use a trick or two to easily cut the cake so that you can serve it to party guests, and then enjoy a special slice, too. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Round Ice Cream Cake

1. Hold the chef's knife under hot running water for approximately 30 seconds to warm the metal. Shake off the excess water from the knife before cutting the cake.

2. Slice a circle in the cake approximately 2 inches from the outer edge of the cake. Run the knife under hot water any time slicing the cake becomes difficult. The warm knife will slice through the frozen layers more easily.

3. Cut the outer perimeter of the cake into wedges, again warming the knife under hot water to make it easy to slice the cake. Use the cake server to serve the wedges to guests on the serving plates.

4. Slice the inner circle into wedges that resemble a pizza and serve the slices to guests.

Sheet Ice Cream Cake

5. Warm the chef's knife under hot water before slicing the cake.

6. Slice horizontal slices in the cake every 2 inches with the warm chef's knife. Run the blade of the knife under hot water if the cake is too hard to cut easily.

7. Cut vertical slices in the cake every 2 inches with the warm chef's knife. Again, warm the blade of the knife under hot water whenever necessary to cut the cake.

8. Serve the square pieces of cake to the guests on the serving plates.

High School Senior Picture Ideas For Guys

Show off your flip-flop style in your cap in gown.

Senior photos are a tradition of graduating, as they document the mark from childhood to adulthood and moving on to the next step in a person's life. Senior photos need not be boring though. In fact it can be an opportunity to show off your unique style and what makes you who you are. A guy should have fun with his pictures and use a couple creative ideas to make his picture stand out.

Sports

Pose with your favorite sports equipment or doing your favorite sport. Like golfing? Take a photo in an odd location such as an abandoned building while golfing, holding your bag or leaning against a club. If football's your thing, hold your helmet in one hand and balance on a football in the grass. Incorporate the sports you played in high school into the photo in a fun way.

Random Furniture

Use a piece of random furniture in a strange location for a simple but unique photo. Some ideas include a sofa in the middle of a field, an office chair in the middle of the street or a desk on top of a building. Sit on the chosen furnishing and pose as you normally would for a traditional portrait. The setting and furnishings will make the photo one-of-a-kind.

Preppy

Do a preppy look where you dress up nice and take traditional smiling and serious portraits. Or dress up nice and take it outdoors walking through a park, by a lake or at a zoo. Clean shaven is usually preferred for this type of portrait as well as hair styled nicely according to your own personal taste.

Hobby

Bring the photos to your hobby. If you like playing video games have the photo session with you at your computer with a video game on the screen. If you are a fan of reptiles, take pictures with lizards and snakes on your arms. Bring out your personality and what you like to do. It will be fun to look back 10 years later and see if you're still interested in the same things.

Hawaii Vacation Ideas

Waikiki on Oahu is popular, but Hawaii has much more to offer.

Hawaii is a classic honeymoon spot, but it is also a prime destination for an active vacation, a family vacation, a sightseeing vacation or a combination of all of the above. Each island has its own special character and hotels that run the gamut from budget to over-the-top luxurious.

Oahu

Don't miss the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.

Home to Honolulu, Oahu also is the location of one of the most popular tourist spots, the Pearl Harbor Memorial. There are actually several sites to visit here: USS Arizona Memorial, Battleship Missouri Memorial and the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum. Honolulu is also where you find the family-friendly Waikiki Beach.

Maui

Maui has beautiful beaches and a verdant, mountainous interior.

If you want to get back to nature, head to Maui, where you can trek through the rain forest, hike the famed Nakalele Coast or kayak in the bluest of waters. For the truly fit, consider hiking into the Haleakala Crater. There is also a rigorous, but stunning, six-hour rain forest/waterfall hike. You can do these on your own, of course, but it becomes a wonderful adventure with a company that makes all the arrangements, such as Maui Eco-Adventures.

Kauai

Kauai's Na Pali Coast is breathtakingly beautiful.

Princeville Ranch Adventures offers several different trips combining hiking, waterfall swimming, kayaking and ziplining. If you are a serious hiker, go for the one-mile Kalalau Trail along the gorgeous Na Pali Coast. If you want thrills, there is a ziplining adventure where you go across several lines, walk a suspension bridge, then relax in tubes in a swimming hole.

The Big Island

Picturesque St. Peter's Church in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii.

If you travel to Hawaii, the Big Island, mid-November to May, consider a whale-watching cruise; this is the season when humpback whales ply the waters. Dolphin Discoveries (http://www.dolphindiscoveries.com) in Kona has whale and dolphin tours, plus snorkeling.

Molokai

If you're looking for a secluded beach, Molokai's Halawa Bay fit the bill.

Molokai (http://www.molokai-hawaii.com/) gives you a glimpse into the Hawaii of old, with mostly empty--but beautiful--beaches, mountain biking, Kumu Farms, where you can taste varieties of papaya and banana, and the Big Wind Kite Factory, where you get a free tour and kite flying lesson.

Make A Sugar Paste Hibiscus

Sugar paste is used to create a variety of edible flowers.

Sugar paste is an edible, moldable paste used for decorating cakes and other desserts. It can be used to cover entire cakes or create small flourishes, such as flowers. Through careful effort and much patience, beautiful edible flowers can be created from the simplest of ingredients. Sugar paste is available pre-made in cooking stores, and can be kept longer than homemade varieties. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Sprinkle powdered sugar all over the flat area where you will be rolling out the sugar paste. Place the sugar paste, preferably in pink or red, on the sugar.

2. Roll the sugar paste out until it is less than 1/8 inch thick.

3. Place the hibiscus cutter on the sugar paste and press down.

4. Lift up the cutter, also removing the shape with it.

5. Pop the sugar flower out of the cutter, using a small knife as a lever if need be.

6. Place the flower shape on the foam pad and use the ball tool to thin the edges by gently rolling them over the ends of the petals.

7. Transfer the flower to the Styrofoam shaper and gently press down to make it concave, and fold the edges over the side to make them flare out.

8. Create an irregular, wavy edge to each petal using the tips of your fingers.

9. Draw little veins throughout the flower petals, with one main one in the middle of each petal, with the vein tool.

10. Roll out one small piece of yellow sugar paste to make a long stamen.

11. Paint on gum glue on the bottom of the flower and the stoma. Attach the two.

12. Dry the flower overnight in a cool, dry place, such as a pantry. Remove it from the mold and use for decoration on desserts.

Create A Pig Pit

Whole pig roasting is a food tradition that many people enjoy. Whole roasted pigs are popular at Hawaiian luaus and other parties. A pig slow roasted on a spit in a pit will produce juicy, succulent meat that your party guests won't want to stop eating. With the help of a friend or two, you can put together a pig pit for your next get together. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Place a piece of tin or other thin metal on the ground where you will build your pit. This is simply to keep from burning up the ground beneath your pig and to keep the juices off the ground. The sheet will need to be wide enough to cover the area inside your pit.

2. Place your first row of cinder blocks on the metal, going all the way around the perimeter. You will need about 48 cinder blocks to make a pit that is four cinder blocks wide and three high on each side. You can adjust these numbers depending upon the size of the pig you plan to roast.

3. Add another round of cinder blocks on top of the those you have already placed. Stagger the placement of the cinder blocks so they overlap one another. Doing so will make the structure more stable and allow you to place your spit securely. Place a metal grate in your pit after this second round of cinder blocks, resting the edges of the grate on the edges of the cinder blocks for support.

4. Stack the last of the cinder blocks the same way, staggering them as you did the first two rows. Add a fourth row of cinder blocks if you'd like the pig to sit a little higher. This is a simple, sturdy structure upon which you can build a hot coal fire to roast a whole pig.

5. Build a fire in your pit using coals or chips of maple or hickory wood. The wood chips can provide a sweeter, smokier flavor but will require you to replenish them more often. Place the coals or wood chips directly on the metal grate in a pile, light them with lighter fluid and level them out once the flame has turned your kindling to red embers. Be sure to cover the entire grate completely. Add more coals or wood to the grate once you've spread them out to ensure there is even heat delivery.

Make A Limbo Game Video

Limbo is a dancing game that originated in the Caribbean. A popular social game, limbo can be played by an unlimited amount of people. Families, friends, and even strangers can play this game to lighten up the mood at any party. To record the limbo game in action, you could record the action with a camcorder. Videotaping the game of limbo provides a visual record of the entertaining event.

Instructions

1. Place your camcorder in a steady place. A table or a counter top is preferable, which provides an even surface for your device. Place the lens of the camcorder in view of the area where the game of limbo will be played.

2. Set up the limbo game. Position the limbo area in a manner where the limbo bar is clearly visible by the camcorder. Its best to allow the limbo bar to face horizontally to the camera, allowing you to watch players attempt to cross under the bar.

3. Press the record button on the camcorder. The camcorder will begin recording the area that the lens is facing.

4. Begin the limbo game. In a traditional game of limbo, several competitors dance towards a horizontal pole. The goal is to lean backwards and pass under the horizontal pole. A player is disqualified upon touching the pole, or touching the floor. The last player left is declared the winner.

5. Press the record button to finish recording the game of limbo.

Hawaiian Snack Foods

Hawaiian snack foods are sweet and savory, tantalizing taste buds with delicate, tropical flavors. Whether you have an insatiable sweet tooth or simply want to try something new, you can't go wrong with Hawaii's delectable island treats. Many online sellers carry and distribute some of Hawaii's most beloved snacks, ready to eat from the package. If you're feeling creative, you can easily make a few popular Hawaiian snacks right in your own kitchen. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Hawaiian Sweet Bread

Sweet bread has been a cherished treat in Hawaii for many years. This sweet, versatile bread has many applications in island kitchens, frequently used in a variety of sandwich and dinner recipes. It is also commonly eaten as a snack, either plain or with a bit of jam or butter. The bread is light, buoyant and fluffy, but deep in flavor. The gentle sweetness of the bread makes this Hawaiian snack a great choice for breakfast or dessert, or an easy-to-eat treat while on the go.

Macadamia Nuts

Though the macadamia tree that produces these rich, sweet-tasting nuts is not indigenous to Hawaii, the macadamia nut has become a classic Island snack. The Mauna Loa macadamia nut company has made ready-to-eat macadamia snacks widely available in grocery stores all over the country, making it easy for Americans to enjoy this tropical treat throughout the continental United States. For a decadent sweet treat, try chocolate-covered macadamia nuts. The sweetness of chocolate pairs with the salty, rich nuts to create a satisfying snack.

Haupia

If you're looking for a traditional Hawaiian snack, you can't go wrong with Haupia. This classic Hawaiian coconut pudding is sweet, smooth and creamy, and has been served as dessert at luaus for more than 100 years. Haupia is shipped and sold by several Hawaiian-based food manufacturers, but you can also make this easy pudding snack from scratch with a few simple ingredients.

Li Hing Mui

Li Hing Mui is a crack seed snack that was introduced to Hawaiians by the Chinese in the 1800s; it has been a cherished island snack ever since. Despite its name, crack seed is not a seed at all, but rather a nugget of sweet, dehydrated and preserved fruits. Li Hing Mui makes a great snack right out of the bag, and can be purchased in a number of tropical varieties and flavors.

Sugar Cane Sticks

Sugar cane sticks are available raw or peeled, cut and ready to eat. These super sweet treats are similar to hard candy sticks. Suck them like a lollipop, chew them, or use them as a stirring stick to sweeten coffee or iced tea. This all-natural snack packs all the sweet taste of typical candies, but makes for a much healthier alternative, as the sugar is enjoyed in its unrefined state.

Hawaiian Traditions For Proposing

Propose to your sweetheart at sunset on a Hawaii beach.

Get a jump-start on the honeymoon and propose to your sweetheart in the stunning setting of Hawaii. From a picnic lunch at Eternity Beach to a helicopter ride over the islands, there is a Hawaiian tradition that will fit your personality and budget to make your proposal one to remember.

Eternity Beach

Halona Beach Cove, aka Eternity Beach, is a small pocket of sand and water on the southeastern shore of Oahu. It was made popular and named Eternity Beach after a love scene in the 1953 movie "From Here to Eternity." Pack a picnic lunch and hike down to the cove with your truelove. When the sun sets, pop the question.

Dinner Cruise

There are numerous dinner cruises available across Hawaii. Choose a romance package and upgrade to a premium or luxury version and sit at a private, seaside table with your darling. Enjoy exquisite cuisine, music and drinks while watching the sunset. Don't worry if you miss the orange hues; the sky is said to be tinted a light-blue dazzling color in the evenings. If you cruise in the winter, you'll probably spot humpback whales, too.

Helicopter Ride

Helicopter tour companies around Hawaii can arrange to have a large banner or sign placed in a remote part of the islands, so as you and your main squeeze fly over, she can read your proposal. Not for the queasy, a helicopter tour is for adventurous types with open wallets.

Atop a Volcano

For the in-shape hiking couple, trek to the top of a volcano and arrive at sunset to ask your beloved's hand in marriage. The Haleakala National Park in Maui offers accessible hikes and spectacular views. Check the sunset times, as you may have to start the hike as early as 4 a.m. to reach the summit by sunset.

Simply Sunset

For a simple yet still romantic proposal, choose a beach and ask the question after presenting your sweetie with a lei. Presenting someone with a lei is considered an expression of love. Practice some native language to kick it up a notch. ("Honi" means kiss; "Ipo" means sweetheart and "Ho'oheno" means to cherish or love.) Top beaches include Sugar Beach in Maui, Waimea Bay in Oahu and Napali Coast in Kauai.

Diver Assisted

The Oceanarium Restaurant at Pacific Beach Hotel in Waikiki has a three-story aquarium filled with ocean creatures. A diver normally plunges into the water to feed the fish; this time, he can take a "Will You Marry Me?" sign down with him, where he will show it to your love at a tank-side table.

Hints For The Computer Game Nancy Drew

Her Interactive has created more than 20 Nancy Drew mystery-adventure games for the PC. Whether you're playing Message in a Haunted Mansion, Danger on Deception Island or The White Wolf of Icicle Creek, following some hints can help you master games in the Nancy Drew series.

Environment Interaction

Nancy Drew adventure games are point-and-click mysteries. Use the mouse to move around and investigate. You can see what items to investigate based on the appearance of your cursor as you pass it over an object. The main cursor is shaped as a magnifying glass. If your magnifying glass turns red, it is a signal to investigate. Click on an area that produces a red magnifying glass to get a closeup view and find out if you can zoom in further. A red cursor also points to items you can pick up and add to your in-game inventory.

In each game screen, make a point to look over the whole area. Hover your cursor over anything that looks suspicious or out of place. The game progresses based on items and information you find, so look at everything you can.

If you find yourself stuck, go through each area again to see if you missed anything. Sometimes, new objects or areas will open as you progress.

Character Interaction

Just as in real life, solving crimes is not always about physical evidence. As Nancy Drew, interview everyone you meet in the game. Even if a character tells you he has an alibi, continue to treat him as a suspect. Talk to everyone as thoroughly as possible and choose every conversation topic available to you. If a character accuses someone of the crime, talk to the accused person again to see if she disputes the accusation.

Different actions lead to new conversations with people. Through the game, be sure to talk to everyone multiple times. For instance, if you find the murder weapon, talk to everyone again in case a character has something more to say about it.

If you don't know what to do next, you might get a hint by talking to the people around you. Characters may let you know about a new area in the game or tell you unlock a mysterious door. Talking to characters can help progress the game if there is nothing left to do.

Give Your Baby A Unique Baby Name

Your baby will need a name! Here's make it unique.

If you're reading this, you're probably having a baby. Congratulations! But your baby will need a baby name. You're probably looking for a more unusual baby name to make your baby stand out above the Johns and Sarahs. Here's some tips on picking a unique baby name.

Instructions

1. Understand that your baby's name is a combination of first name, a likely middle name, and the last name. All of this must be taken into consideration when naming the baby. How will they sound when pronounced together? What will the initials spell?

2. Since your baby actually has three names - first name, middle name, and last name - the baby's first name doesn't have to be completely one-of-a-kind for the baby's whole name to be good. But you're probably looking for a more unusual name, so read on.

3. As you go about your day, notice words that you like.

Some city names, like Paris or Brooklyn, make great and rare baby names.

You might also notice occupational names, like Hunter, Justice, or Piper.

Even adjectives can make names. One of the great American judges went by the name Learned Hand.

4. Looking for something even more unusual? Think about syllables that sound nice and consider combining them. Or spell words backwards. That's how the name Nevaeh got started (heaven backwards).

5. Don't go overboard! Remember that this is your child's name. It is fundamental to them; it is part of their identity. You have the opportunity to give them a great name - a special name that they'll love. At the same time, you'll do well to test run the name by your friends and family to see what they think before making it official.

Cook Blue Crabs And Clams

You can have your own seaside-inspired party by steaming large amounts of clams and blue crabs. While the clams need preparation and cleaning several hours before cooking, once readied, the clams and crabs steam in a large pot of water in minutes. Keep in mind that blue crabs have less meat so you will need about 2 pounds of live crabs per person. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

Make the Clams

1. Combine 1 gallon of water with 1/3 cup kosher salt in a 2-gallon bucket three to four hours before cooking. Immediately add all the live clams and let them soak until 1 hour before cooking so the clams will purge their dirt. Do not use iodized salt because it will kill the clams; after soaking, the clams should still be alive.

2. Strain the live, soaked clams in a strainer and rinse them thoroughly. Scrub their shells with a brush to remove any remaining dirt.

3. Put 2 tbsps. butter into the bottom of the steamer pot over medium heat. Add the garlic and onion and cook them until they turn soft and translucent. Pour the wine and hot pepper sauce over the garlic and onion in the bottom of the steamer pot and bring the mixture to a boil.

4. Place the live clams inside the top portion of the pot. Attach the top to the bottom of the steamer pot and cover with a lid. Steam the clams for 10 minutes until all of the shells open. Remove the clams to a table covered in newspaper and serve with seafood forks, crusty bread and melted butter.

Make the Blue Crabs

5. Fill the steamer pot with water. Check to make sure the water level will not touch the base of the steamer basket by placing the steamer basket on top of the pot. Remove the basket and add 2 tbsps. of crab boil seasoning to the water.

6. Bring the water in the pot to a boil. Place the steamer basket on top and put the live crabs into the steamer basket. When handling the live crabs, wear heavy gloves or use tongs. Pick up the crabs from the back between the back set of legs with your thumb on top of the shell and the rest of your fingers beneath.

7. Cover the pot with a lid and steam the crabs for 8 to 10 minutes or until the crabs turn bright red.

8. Serve the crabs atop newspaper covered tables with melted butter, crusty bread and bibs, napkins, small paring knives and small wooden mallets.

9. Eat the blue crabs. Pull the pincers from the crab's claws. Twist off the hind legs. Pull the remaining legs off. Wedge your knife on the underside of the crab between the meat and the base covering (apron) and remove the apron. Turn the crab over and repeat to pull off the top shell. Cut the gills and mustard off the underside of the crab. Slice the remaining meat from the shell and eat. Break the claws with the mallet and pull the claw meat out with your teeth. Discard the shell and move on to the next crab.

Homemade Hobo Costume

A rumpled suit is the main portion of your costume

Hobo costumes are a hit with adults because they are easy, inexpensive and fun. You can put on any old clothes and call yourself a hobo, but to follow in the footsteps of Charlie Chaplin and Emmett Kelly Jr., you will have to assemble a specific costume. You can purchase nearly everything you will need at a thrift store; the more cheap and shabby the clothes you get the better. You can add props like a liquor bottle or cardboard sign if you want.

Instructions

1. Purchase an old suit from a thrift shop. The uglier and more threadbare it is, the better it will look.

2. Get the suit wet, then crumple it up and let it dry to get a really rumpled look.

3. Distress areas such as the cuffs and lapels by roughly rubbing a dog brush (or another brush with hard bristles) against the fabric.

4. Sew a few polka-dot patches to the suit if desired.

5. Put the suit on along with a dirty dress shirt, necktie, scuffed shoes and a bowler hat.

6. Wrap a bandana around some clothing and tie it to the end of a stick.

7. Grow a few days worth of stubble, or add some with black makeup using a black stipple sponge (a chunk of fish tank filter works well to).

Hawaii Allinclusive Hotels

One of Hawaii's waterfalls

Many people dream of a vacation in the state of Hawaii, an archipelago of eight main islands in the central Pacific ocean, located approximately one third of the distance between Los Angeles and the Philippines. When considering the cost of air fare and the hotel together, a vacation in Hawaii can be expensive. However, a number of hotels offer all-inclusive vacations that are well worth investigating.

Kona Village Resort

Kona Village is an all-inclusive resort located on the Kohala Coast in Hawaii's main island. Guest suites consist of thatched bungalows scattered through the resort's 62 acres, surrounded by coconut palms and just a short stroll down to the beach. Don't expect certain amenities, such as televisions, radios or even air-conditioning. When you stay at Kona Village you'll experience luxury with none of these stressful distractions. The all-inclusive cost covers all meals, luau and ocean activities, such as outrigger canoeing, snorkeling and activities included in their Alaka'i Nalu program. Other activities available include sailing, scuba diving, windsurfing and paddleboards.

AATPA Inc. Royal Lahaina Resort

The Royal Lahaina Hotel is located in a 27-acre resort on Maui's Kaanapali Beach. The resort offers two levels of all-inclusive vacation and a third couples-only "Romance special." The number and type of all-inclusive items that are offered depend on which program you choose. At the top of the range you'll enjoy several meals, generous bar credits, a dinner cruise, Hawaiian luau (beach pig roast and buffet) and mai tai's, as well as the resort's amenities. This 1962-built hotel underwent a $35 million guestroom and suite refurbishment in 2007.

Waikiki Inclusive: Outrigger Reef on the Beach

The Outrigger Reef on the Beach is a completely renovated resort hotel on Waikiki Beach, Hawaii. Waikiki Inclusive offers all inclusive packages of five to ten nights. These include buffet breakfasts, all-you-can-eat buffet dinners, a dinner show at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani, dinner cruise on the Star of Honolulu and catamaran sail on the Mana Kai. The hotel has three restaurants to choose from, as well as cocktail lounges and live entertainment. There is a large pool with three whirlpool spas. Guestrooms carry all of the usual amenities.

Hawaii-Aloha: Kauai Beach Resort

The Kauai Beach Resort is located on the island of Kauai on a quiet three-mile long beach. The resort is just three miles from the airport at Lihue, and from the towns of Wailua and Lihue. Guestrooms feature a patio or a lanai overlooking the ocean. An all-inclusive package here includes airport transfers, breakfasts, dinners, ten alcoholic beverages per couple, tours of Waimea Canyon and Hanalei Valley and gratuities. This package is booked through Hawaii-Aloha.

Make A Hawaiian Totem Decoration

Paint totem pole decorations in bright colors.

Traditional Hawaiian tiki totem poles are carved from wood in the same manner as those of the Northwest Native Americans. Featuring the symbolic imagery of the tiki gods from Polynesia, they are hand carved wooden poles that are painted in bright, vivid colors. Totem decorations are ideal for a Hawaiian theme party and will help to set the scene. Make small totem poles as decorations for the table or tiki bar.

Instructions

1. Place some sand or pebbles inside the cardboard tube and replace the lid. This will add weight to keep the finished pole standing upright.

2. Look at images of Hawaiian totem poles online for inspiration to help you plan your design. Draw animal and face shapes onto the cardboard tube with pencil or marker.

3. Scrunch or roll newspaper into small balls and long sausage shapes. Position these along the lines you have drawn on the cardboard roll to make the facial features such as eye, mouth and nose shapes. Secure them in position with masking tape.

4. Cover the completed design with two layers of papier mache. Tear tissue paper into 1-inch pieces and use diluted white craft glue to stick it in place. Use one part water to two parts glue. Allow it to dry for 24 hours.

5. Paint the totem pole with acrylic craft paint, highlighting the facial features.

6. Finish with a coat of clear varnish.

Get Distance And Altitude In Frisbee Throwing

Throwing a Frisbee, or any flying disc, is more fun when you can get height and distance with each attempt. Few things are as frustrating as being unable to get the disc to your partner when she is any appreciable distance away from you. Getting the basics right helps you throw far and with accuracy.

Instructions

1. Check your stance. Just as in throwing a football, a baseball, or a basketball, you need to be relatively secure in your footing, at least while learning the basic techniques. When you get more proficient and handling and throwing the Frisbee, then you can get height and distance from a variety of off-balance stances.

2. Grip the Frisbee for a basic throw, thumb on top, index finger along the ridge, with the other fingers curled under the ridge. Think of using your index finger as a true pointer: as you move your arm in the necessary arc to throw, let the Frisbee go when your index finger is pointing at the person to whom you are throwing.

3. Let the Frisbee go with a solid "snap," at about chest height, at an angle parallel to the ground. In low wind, this basic throw guarantees you maximum distance, as long as you have a good release at a flat angle.

4. Throw it from an underhand position to get more height and, possibly, more distance. Grip the Frisbee as described above, but start with it at your side, vertical to the ground on the same side as your throwing hand. Bring it up in an arc toward the center line of your body and let it go when you get it almost horizontal.

Make A Mermaid Costume For Kids

Make a mermaid costume for your daughter this Halloween.

Whether your little girl is a Disney's "The Little Mermaid" fan or just fascinated with the finned ladies of the sea, a mermaid costume is the right choice for her. Instead of handing over a lot of money for a store-bought costume she only wears a few times, make your own using a skirt and a bikini top. The finished product is a unique costume that takes little time and energy to create.

Instructions

1. Attach small seashells to the front of a bikini top using a hot glue gun. You want the shells to cover the entire top. Leave the straps uncovered. The number of shells depends on the size shells you use and the size of the bikini top. Look for shells at your local craft store.

2. Measure your child's waist and hips with a measuring tape. Measure your child's height from foot to waist. Add 1 inch to each measurement.

3. Draw a fish tail shape on the back of a piece of sequined fabric. Use the measurements from the prior step to determine the length and width of the tail. Cut the tail shape out of the fabric. Use the cut-out tail to trace a second tail shape on a second piece of sequined fabric. Cut that tail out as well.

4. Place the two tail pieces on top of one another with the right sides facing each other. Use straight pins to attach the sides of the tails together, leaving the top and bottom open. On a sewing machine, sew the sides together using a 1/2-inch seam allowance and remove the straight pins.

5. Cut a piece of 1/2-inch elastic to match your child's waist measurements minus 3 to 4 inches. Bring the loose ends together. Place a 1-inch piece of scrap fabric behind the loose ends. Use a zig-zag stitch on your sewing machine to secure the ends together.

6. Place the elastic 1/2 an inch below the top edge of the sewn tail. Fold the top edge of the fabric over the elastic and secure it in place with straight pins. Using a zig-zag stitch on your sewing machine, sew down the middle of the elastic to secure it to the waist of the tail. Remove the straight pins.

7. Dress your child in a flesh-toned bodysuit to keep her warm and covered. Put the fish tail and the bikini top over the bodysuit.

Make A Tongue Drum With Two Wooden Bowls

Use a hardwood like rosewood to make a slit drum out of bowls.

A tongue drum, or slit drum, is simply a box with slits cut into it to produce differing resonating sounds. You can use a variety of woods to make this kind of drum. Use a hardwood for the top side of the drum with any other type of wood as the base, although you can use the same type of wooden bowls for this project. The key to the tongue drum is varying the lengths and widths of the slits in the wood. You can decide how many slits you want to make in a tongue drum with two wooden bowls.

Instructions

1. Set one bowl with the open side up. This will be the base of the tongue drum.

2. Position the other bowl upside down on top of the first bowl so that the bottom of the bowl is facing up. This is the top of the drum.

3. Draw six 1/2-inch-long-by-1/2-inch-wide horseshoe-shaped markings around the edge of the bottom of the top bowl. Leave 1/4-inch of space between each horseshoe shape. Use the marking gauge to mark the lines to prepare for cutting.

4. Make straight cuts along the lines you made with the marking gauge with the 1/4-inch straight bit on the router saw. The bowl will to have six tongues cut into the bottom of the bowl.

5. Apply wood glue to the rim of the base bowl. Turn the slit bowl over and place the rim of that bowl directly on top of the rim of the base bowl.

6. Attach the clamp to the bowls. Allow the glue to dry overnight.

7. Drill a hole 1/3-inch deep in each super ball-bouncing ball with a 1/8-inch drill bit.

8. Stick the wooden dowels into the holes in the bouncing balls.

9. Remove the clamp from the bowls. Sand the edges to meld the two bowls evenly together. Wipe away any grit from the sander.

Design A Free Flyer

Flyers are an effective and proven method of advertising events and promotions.

If you need to create flyers for an event or promotion but wish to avoid high printing costs, they can be simply created with the software installed on your computer. However the most challenging aspect of creating flyers for free can be the design process. If a flyer is not designed effectively, it can be a waste of time even distributing them. Designing your own flyers does not require a background in graphic design and following this set of guidelines can ensure that your flyers convert to sales.

Instructions

1. Think of an attention grabbing headline for your flyer. The headline is the first thing that the recipient will see and it should dominate the top quarter of the page. Use an easy to read font with clear space around it. The headline can be the deciding factor as to whether the recipient will carry on reading or drop your flyer in the nearest bin.

2. Use images, but don't go overboard. One or two eye-catching photos or images are excellent for grabbing a reader's attention. Use one large image in the top half of the page that is relative to the content of the flyer. If you do not have suitable photographs, use public domain stock images or clipart which are available for free on the Web.

3. Keep it simple. There is no need to fill every area of the flyer with design. The recipient needs to be able to absorb the key concepts of the promotion as quickly as possible. Use text and white space in equal quantities to ensure that the reader's eye has nowhere else to wander other that the information you are presenting.

4. Keep your word count low. Include important information in as few words as possible. A few well worded, key phrases about your promotion are more likely to be absorbed by your reader. Gain interest with the basic details. Direct the reader to your website to receive additional information, rather than cramming it all into the flyer.

5. Include an offer on your flyer that the reader can take advantage of when they present it back to you at your business or event. A discount or free gift will reduce the chance of your flyer being discarded and draw customers to your business.

6. Print your flyers in full color on good quality semi-gloss paper. A high quality flyer presents an image of a high quality organization.

Create Your Own Palm Tree Invitation

Tropical-themed luau parties are popular. Most party supply stores carry all of the decorations you need, ranging from the simple and inexpensive lei to the costly 10-foot-tall illuminated palm tree. If you'd like to add a bit of personal flare to your luau party, you can make your own palm tree invitations to send to your invitees. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Decide which way you want your invitation to open--left to right, or bottom to top.

2. Apply ink to the palm tree rubber stamp. To do this properly, gently but firmly tap the rubber stamp onto the stamp pad several times. Do not mash down hard, and do not drag the stamp across the ink pad. This will result in ink collecting in the empty spaces on the rubber stamp, which will put large blobs of ink on your invitations.

3. Hold the rubber stamp directly above where you want the inked image to be on your card. Keep in mind how the invitation opens. For instance, if the invitation opens left to right, place it so that the palm tree is upright. If the invitation opens top to bottom, place the stamp so that the top of the tree is pointing toward the fold of the card.

Press the rubber stamp directly down, with a firm touch. Again, don't mash, or it could lead to distortion of the image.

4. Stamp the entire stack of invitations. Allow the inked images to dry completely. You can test this by pressing a tissue onto the ink.

5. Use your markers to embellish the cards. Add coconuts to the trees, and draw a simple, tiny island, coloring in water around the island.

6. Carefully smear a substantial amount of glue onto the tiny island that you've drawn, and pour sand onto the glue. Press the sand down to make sure it adheres to the glue. Don't worry if you see blobs of glue, because it will dry clear.

7. Allow several hours for each of the invitations to dry completely.

8. Fill out the inside of the invitation, giving the time and location details about the party.

9. Address the envelopes to your invitees. Consider adding tropical stickers or doodles on each of the envelopes. Affix the stamps to all of the invitations that will be delivered through the mail. Do not put the invitations in the envelopes until the day you intend to mail them or hand them out.

10. Spray each invitation with the coconut-scented spray, and immediately stuff them into the envelopes right before you are going to deliver them.

Make 5th Grade Graduation Fun

Enjoy a fun fifth grade graduation without ever leaving the campus.

For many kids, fifth grade graduation marks the end of elementary school and the start of junior high. Although the graduation serves as something of a coming-of-age moment, the ceremony should cater to children, remaining light-hearted and fun. For an added bit of entertainment, incorporate parents and teachers into the ceremony as much as possible.

Awards

Hand out a series of awards for academic achievement, providing recipients with colorful pins or certificates. Reward truly gifted kids with gift cards to local attractions, such as child-friendly restaurants, miniature golf courses and theme or water parks. Pass out silly awards, too, like "Biggest Bookworm," "The Mary Sunshine Award" to the most positive kid in the class, and "The Next LeBron James Award" for the top basketball player in the fifth grade. Let the students give awards to the teachers as well, such as "Best Dressed," "Best Comedian" and "Most School Spirit." Honor involved parents as well, such as room mothers, with a bouquet of flowers.

Slide Show

Create a slide show featuring members of the graduating class. Make certain to include photos of all the kids. To celebrate the graduates' journey through elementary school, ask parents for photos of their children spanning kindergarten through fifth grade. You can also screen a video montage set to music at the graduation. Designate a videographer at the start of the school year to film events, including Halloween parades, fundraisers and Christmas parties.

Themed Party

Host a party in the school's cafeteria or gym following the graduation. Pick a theme for the party, such as a luau or Western theme. Provide fun yet inexpensive costume items for the graduates, like plastic leis for a luau or cowboy hats for Western-themed parties. Fill the cafeteria or gym with aptly themed decorations. Offer light refreshments like cake and punch. Hire a photographer for the party, allowing students to take pictures with their parents against a backdrop.

Carnival

As most graduations take place in June, some elementary schools may host an outdoor carnival after the fifth grade graduation ceremony. Provide carnival game booths, like ring tosses and balloon dart games. Offer prizes for game winners, such as school t-shirts and baseball caps, or school supplies, like folders, erasers, pencil boxes, rulers and calculators. Ask parents or teachers to run food booths, serving drinks, barbeque and desserts.
