Homemade Shaggy Costumes

Shaggy Rogers is a popular cartoon and movie character from the "Scooby-Doo" franchise. Best pals with the main character, Scooby-Doo, Shaggy is part of a crime-solving team -- but not the brightest of the bunch. Nevertheless, Shaggy is all about fun and adventure, making him a fun character for Halloween. Create his costume with some items from thrift stores or your local costume shop to make your attire unmistakably Shaggy.

T-shirt

Shaggy's character wears a lime green T-shirt with a rounded neckline that extends to just below the top of the thigh. Purchase a long T-shirt for your costume, and then use fabric dye to transform the shirt to lime green. If you are using an old T-shirt, make sure you wash it first so that any stains are not highlighted by the fabric dye.

Pants and Shoes

For the pants, choose some brown pants that are baggy at the bottom of the legs, with bell bottoms, if possible. Any type of material for the pants will work fine. If you have to select a larger pair of jeans than you normally wear, cinch up the waist with a belt or rope, which will be covered by the long T-shirt. Round out the outfit with some plain brown or black shoes.

Hair

Shaggy's hair is a light brown and in a mop-top, disheveled style. With poofy bangs, cut in at the sides to show the ears and curved in at the back down to the base of the head, the hair is cut in layers. To make your own Shaggy wig, find an old light brown wig and place it on a Styrofoam head. Use a picture of Shaggy as your guide, then take your time to trim the wig, section by section, to resemble Shaggy's hair. If you make a mistake, don't worry. Use hairspray to shape the final cut into the style that you desire, being sure to pull up a few sprigs of hair here and there to give it that disheveled look.

Goatee

To make Shaggy's goatee, use liquid latex and some crepe hair. These items are available at costume shops or online theatrical makeup suppliers. Dab the liquid latex on your chin using a makeup sponge. Let the first coat dry, then apply a second coat. Unwind the crepe hair and cut it the length that you want the goatee. Apply the ends of the crepe hair to the liquid latex on your chin using only a few pieces at a time. If the latex dries before you have applied all the hair that you want, simply dab on a little more liquid latex over the area and apply more hair. Once all the hair is applied, allow the latex to dry completely; trim the goatee as desired. You can remove the goatee from your chin by peeling it off. If you need to reapply it, brush the back of it with spirit gum and press to your chin until the spirit gum dries.
