Homemade Tiki Decorations

Use tiki torches to decorate for your party.

Tiki decorations are appropriate for beach parties, luaus, Jamaican-themed parties and most parties with a summer theme. Save yourself some money by making tiki decorations from simple materials that you might already have at home.

Identification

Tiki decorations are inspired by ancient Hawaiian wood carvings that were originally used as idols. The style became popular in the United States in 1934, when it was introduced to Hollywood, California by Don Beach, who opened a tiki-inspired restaurant.

Decorating Options

To decorate for your tiki party, draw your own ancient idols on cardboard or heavy-duty construction paper. Hang the tiki gods on the wall or string them together to make banners. Use crinkled red, orange and yellow tissue paper to create a flameless tiki torch. For a more advanced project, build a makeshift tiki bar.

Accessorize

Complement your homemade tiki decorations with desserts, drinks and party favors. Give each guest a grass skirt at the door and serve rum punch, Hawaiian punch, and a volcano cake for dessert.
