A hula skirt can be a fun craft for kids.
Whether you are making one for a Hawaiian themed party of just a play skirt for your little girl, hula skirts are a fun item your little girl will enjoy. With just a few simple items, you and your little girl can make one together and she can be proud to say she helped make her own clothes. While traditional skirts are made of grass, cellophane, ti leaves or lauhala, raffia is easy to work with and gives the same effect.
Instructions
1. Measure the waist of the girl the skirt will be made for. Measure the length from her waist to her ankles.
2. Cut the narrow piece of material a few inches longer than the waist of the girl. Either use the Velcro to attach the ends of the skirt or use the extra length to just tie the skirt on. If you are using the Velcro method, attach the Velcro to the ends of the piece of material by gluing or sewing them on.
3. Lay the waistband on a flat surface. Take the long strings of raffia and cut to the length you measured from the girl's waist to ankles.
4. Place a line of glue on a section of the waistband and begin gluing pieces of the raffia to the waistband. Continue with this until the entire waistband in covered with the raffia and there are no spaces in between. Place a heavy object on top of the raffia and allow the glue to dry overnight and your hula skirt is complete.
