Hawaii Home Business Ideas

Hawaii abounds with home business opportunities.

Most people think of Hawaii as one big tourist attraction. It is indeed, but that does not negate the locals, who have needs similar to their mainland counterparts. You can carve out your own home business opportunity to either fill a need for locals or fill a desire for tourists.

Tourists

A flower les business could really blossom.

Share the aloha spirit with tourists by launching your own flower lei business. Flowers are plentiful in Hawaii, so you're set with your supply. Similarly, Hawaii attracts myriad tourists, so your demand is there. Collect island flowers and set up shop in your home to make leis. You could sell them out of your home, or take your wares on the road to various tourist attractions.

What tourist doesn't like to take home at least a token souvenir? Photograph local sunsets and landscapes, then frame them. Similar to your lei business, you could either sell the photos out of your home, display them at tourist attractions or even sell them to local gift shops.

Locals

Hawaii's children may have too much fun in the sun.

Hawaii has so much to offer tourists and locals alike, but one area where locals are shortchanged is education. Citing the state of our nation's economy, Garret Toguchi, chairman of the State Board of Education in Hawaii, moved the state to a four-day school week in the fall of 2009. Hawaiian schools are in session for only 163 days, whereas most other states mandate 180 days. Parents are angry, especially because Hawaii ranks near the bottom in national test scores. While less than ideal for young families, that presents a great business opportunity for you. Set up a home-based tutoring business. Go to the local school districts to get copies of the various grade-level curriculum. Familiarize yourself with the curriculum, then advertise your service. Start by agreeing to see children on Fridays because you know there will be few, if any, conflicts.

Consult with school administrators to see where Hawaiian children's biggest deficit lies according to national tests. Focus your business on those disciplines.

Retirees

Hawaii is a hotbed for retirees.

Hawaii attracts retirees because of the mild climate. Some may need help, while others may seek services for the sheer convenience of it. Set up a meals on wheels service. Contact local 55 and over communities to see who is in need of assistance with regard to meals. You could either prepare the meals yourself, or negotiate with local restaurants or caterers to pick up prix fixe meals on given days and deliver them to your customers.
