Make A Simple Clown For A Centerpiece

Decorate your child's circus birthday party with a clown centerpiece.

Crafting your own decorations can greatly reduce your party's expense in addition to allowing you to add your personal touch to the party. Put the finishing touches on your child's circus party theme by making a simple clown as a centerpiece. Make one centerpiece for the table or several to decorate a buffet or side table. To further lower the project's cost, use recycled or repurposed items as the supplies. Involve your children in the preparations by having them help craft the clown in the days leading up to the party.

Instructions

1. Paint the outside of a 6-inch clay flower pot with white acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry and apply an additional coat for complete coverage. Randomly apply colorful sticky-dots to the outside surface of the pot.

2. Place masking tape over the hole on the inside of the pot.

3. Apply hot glue to the inside of the pot. Insert a green floral foam brick into the pot. Cut off any excess foam that extends past the rim of the pot with a serrated knife.

4. Insert a new pencil into the center of the floral foam. Push the pencil to the bottom of the pot.

5. Sponge-paint the back of a fluted-edged paper plate with red acrylic paint and a kitchen sponge.

6. Poke a hole in the center of the plate using scissors.

7. Place the paper plate over the top of the pot with the paint side facing up. Place the paper plate's hole over the extended end of the pencil. This is the clown's collar.

8. Place a 5-inch foam ball over the pencil and push down until the foam is firmly set on the pencil. Be sure not to poke the pencil through the foam ball. Remove the ball. Apply hot glue to the hole in the ball. Reapply the ball over the pencil. This is the clown's head.

9. Hot glue 24 1/2-inch red pompoms to the top, back and sides of the head to serve as the clown's hair.

10. Apply hot glue to the inside rim of a 4-inch straw hat. Place the hat on top of the head.

11. Remove a large silk blossom from its stem. Hot glue the blossom to the hat's brim.

12. Apply hot glue to a 1/2-inch red pompom and place it in the center of the face.

13. Draw a 3-inch smile line on red construction paper using a pencil. Expand the thickness of the smile by tracing a 1/2 inch from both sides of the smile and the ends of the smile. Cut out the expanded version of the smile. Apply a thin, sparing amount of craft glue to the pencil-marked side of the smile. Position the smile on the clown's face just below the nose.

14. Place a penny on black construction paper and trace around it twice. Cut out the two black circles. These are the clown's eyes. Place a quarter on pink construction paper and trace around it twice. Cut out the two pink circles. These are the clown's cheeks.

15. Apply a sparing amount of craft glue to one side of each eye and cheek. Position the eyes above the nose and space them 1/4 inch apart. Position the cheeks above the ends of the smile.
