Making an island for a school project is a hands-on way to learn about islands and their features. There are a few different ways to make island projects. An island project can be made out of clay with different features shown by molding the parts of the island. An island can also be made using Styrofoam by sculpting an island from a block of Styrofoam. Lastly, if you do not want to spend much money to make your project, you can simply draw your island on a sheet of construction paper and label all of the important features.

Making a Clay Island Project
1. Draw the design for your clay island on a sheet of paper. This design will give you something to refer to when constructing your island.
2. Roll your piece of clay out flat on a table or any other flat surface. You can either have a flat-bottomed island or a thick-bottomed island.
3. Use the wood sculpting knife to carve out the shape of the perimeter of the island. Any excess clay can be used for formation decoration.
4. Use the sculpting knife to form the different features that will give your island project more depth.
Decorate your island with paint and let it dry.
Making a Styrofoam Island Project
5. Draw the design for you Styrofoam island project on a sheet of paper to get an idea of the changes that will need to be made to the Styrofoam.
6. Begin sculpting the shape of the island with a pair of scissors by lightly shaving or cutting the surface of the Styrofoam until it is shaped as you desire.
7. Finish sculpting the details of the island with the scissors. You can include geographical features on your island by sculpting mountains or any other geographical features to give your project more depth.
8. Paint or use markers to decorate and color your Styrofoam island.

9. Draw some sketches of your island on a piece of paper to give you something to refer to when you are designing your project. Drawing a design before you start will reduce the amount of mistakes you make.
10. Choose a shape for your island as well as other details in the landscape or terrain that can be drawn on the paper. Draw the shape of the island on the construction paper.
11. Draw different geographical features on your island and decorate it with markers or crayons. Make sure to show that the island is surrounded by water.
