Green Birthday Party Favors

Birthdays always bring the challenge of providing party favors, whether green or not. It's tricky to buy something worthwhile while not spending a fortune. The best way to go "eco" on birthday party favors for children is, frankly, to skip them. However, when you feel that may look bad, or you simply wish to give something out, try these tips. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Zoom in on the practical. While not exactly eco, toothbrushes are practical and will not be tossed in a landfill until worn through. Find some fun themes.

2. Pick fair-trade items through specialty shops or Internet access. Make sure that money goes back to the craftspeople. Musical instruments and novelty items can be lovely and fun. Recycled pieces include small bags.

3. Go for Melissa and Doug items. While manufactured overseas, these usually feature wood in their preschool- and kindergarten-type pieces. Buy a quality rubber stamp set and distribute them, three or four to a child, as favors.

4. Purchase locally made chocolates or nuts or chocolate-covered nuts. Lollipops, taffy or fudge can also work. These depend on your judgment regarding sweets for kids. You can also bake cookies to give as party favors.

5. Buy wooden barrettes or ponytail holders for girls. These can be attractive and special little gifts for eco-conscious fashionistas of the future.

6. Combine a craft with a favor by letting kids decorate their own cloth tote bags. Invest in fabric paint and watch the creativity flow.
