Hawaiian Wedding Decorations

Planning a Hawaiian themed wedding, or an actual Hawaii wedding, typically includes decorating in a Hawaiian fashion. There are several approaches you can take, depending on where the celebration is actually taking place, your personal style, the budget and formality of the wedding.

Sand and Sea

Thinking of Hawaii typically invokes images of bright blue skies, sandy beaches and the clear blue water of the Pacific Ocean. Include the ocean in your decorations by using elements from the sea. Tropical fish, dolphins, sail boats, sea turtles (or Honu), sand, flip flops, little drink umbrellas, palm trees and sea shells can be included in decorations in many ways. For instance, if you are choosing sea turtles as your focus, use large carved wooden bowls in the shape of turtles to hold floating candles or flowers. Then give key chains, picture frames, charms, small carved figurines or jewelry as favors and gifts. Sea shells can be used in a variety of ways as well, including shell leis, sand and sea shells in vases or small jars for centerpieces, place card holders, frames and magnets.

Flowers

Hawaii also brings thoughts of beautiful, colorful exotic flowers. Flowers can be fresh, to include the rich fragrance they possess, or silk to withstand non-tropical weather and last longer. Either way, the flowers can be used in leis, bouquets, centerpieces, hair pieces, corsages, boutonnieres and cake decorations. Popular Hawaiian flowers include Orchids, exotic Plumeria, Hibiscus flowers, Anthuriums, Ohia Lehua, White Kukui Blossoms, White Pupu Shell and Birds of Paradise. Many of these flowers come in rich colors including reds, pinks, purples, yellows and oranges.

Other Common Symbols

Pineapples, macadamia nuts, ukuleles, hand-carved wooden pieces, grass skirts and coconuts are all things that are associated with Hawaii. Pineapples can be incorporated into wedding decorations as edible fruit, pineapple-shaped carved bowls or cups, jewelry, or candle holders. Macadamia nuts make great edible treats and favors. Ukuleles can be included by having live music or giving small renditions as favors. Hand-carved wood comes in many shapes, sizes and functions, such as bowls, candle holders, vases, dishes and decorative figurines.
