Makawao lies on the slopes of the Haleakala volcano.
Makawao lies on the northeastern slopes of the Haleakala volcano in Maui, Hawaii. The area is known for its cowboys or paniolos who have wrangled cattle in the area since the late 19th century, and one of Maui's most popular events is the annual Fourth of July rodeo. Other attractions in the area include the Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center, which offers classes and art exhibits. Although there are no hotels in the area, visitors will find a good range of bed and breakfast and guesthouse-style accommodations to suit all tastes.
The Banyan Tree House
The Banyan Tree House occupies a historic plantation property, half a mile from Makawao's downtown area and 15 minutes from the beach. Accommodations are spread throughout a three-bedroom house, which Frommer's recommends for a family or large group of friends, and four individual cottages. All rooms are decorated with hardwood floors and vintage Hawaiian furniture, and are shaded by large monkeypod trees. Banyan Tree House is a good option for people looking for a peaceful retreat, thanks to what Frommer's calls its "comfortable, easygoing atmosphere." Facilities include a 50-foot salt-purified swimming pool, and yoga and meditation center. A complimentary continental breakfast of fruit, muffins and juice is provided each morning.

Aloha Cottage
Aloha Cottage occupies five acres of landscaped, tropical grounds just outside Makawao Forest Reserve. Frommer's describes Aloha Cottage as "a very romantic lodging." The property has two cottages: the Thai Tree House and Bali Bungalow, both decorated with southeast Asian handicrafts and Oriental carpets, and featuring fully-equipped kitchens, complimentary wireless Internet access and outdoor hot tubs. This property provides a cottage rental experience and service is limited: housekeeping comes only once a week and there is no meal service. The owners can assist with activity planning, however, and nearby dining venues include Casanova Italian Restaurant and Deli two miles away. Aloha Cottage requests that guests book for a minimum of three nights.
