Homemade Hobo Costume

A rumpled suit is the main portion of your costume

Hobo costumes are a hit with adults because they are easy, inexpensive and fun. You can put on any old clothes and call yourself a hobo, but to follow in the footsteps of Charlie Chaplin and Emmett Kelly Jr., you will have to assemble a specific costume. You can purchase nearly everything you will need at a thrift store; the more cheap and shabby the clothes you get the better. You can add props like a liquor bottle or cardboard sign if you want.

Instructions

1. Purchase an old suit from a thrift shop. The uglier and more threadbare it is, the better it will look.

2. Get the suit wet, then crumple it up and let it dry to get a really rumpled look.

3. Distress areas such as the cuffs and lapels by roughly rubbing a dog brush (or another brush with hard bristles) against the fabric.

4. Sew a few polka-dot patches to the suit if desired.

5. Put the suit on along with a dirty dress shirt, necktie, scuffed shoes and a bowler hat.

6. Wrap a bandana around some clothing and tie it to the end of a stick.

7. Grow a few days worth of stubble, or add some with black makeup using a black stipple sponge (a chunk of fish tank filter works well to).
