Homemade Hawaiian Party Themes

Hosting a Hawaiian-themed party means finding the tropical elements that call to you and using them to create homemade party decorations (or purchase some inexpensive ones) to set the tone for your celebration. Decide on the mood you'd like to create and how laid back you want the party to be. Luau, tiki and tropical paradise are only a few options to consider when it comes to your party. Does this Spark an idea?

Luau

Make decorations out of basic household items or invest in inexpensive items at a craft or party store to create a luau in your own backyard (or wherever you're hosting your Hawaiian party). Set up a low table by using large pieces of plywood set on bricks. Use green butcher paper to cover the table, then fray the edges for a grass skirt effect. Toss soft pillows or large garbage bags filled with crumbled up paper on the ground to use as seats if you desire something softer than the ground.

Tiki

Create mock tikis (the carved wooden faces) out of paper mache or draw faces onto brown construction paper with black markers. Wrap the paper around round items, such as empty soda bottles, with only your tiki showing. For children or playful adults, consider making tiki masks out of paper mache or construction paper as well. Weigh the bottles down by filling them with sand or dirt. Use tiki torches if you have some, or string lights around. White holiday lights will work if you don't have anything else.

Tropical Paradise

Turn your party area into a tropical paradise by making palm trees, leis and surfboards.

Palm trees can be created by using green construction or tissue paper for the leaves and attaching them to wrapping paper rolls or paper towel rolls. Cover the rolls with brown construction paper, if you desire, and tape as many rolls together as you'd like to create the height and dimensions you're looking for. Weigh the palm trees down by placing them in buckets or containers filled with sand.

Make your own leis out of silk flowers or tissue paper flowers that you can cut out yourself, and then thread them together with string. Plastic leis can usually be purchased fairly inexpensively at party stores if you'd prefer having them pre-made.

Cut a surfboard shape out of a large cardboard box and decorate it with large images of tropical flowers or paint it to look like a wave or any other design you'd want on a surfboard. Use a real surfboard as a prop if you already have one or can borrow one from a friend.

Coconuts can be made out of brown paper bags filled with wadded up paper or plastic bags. Fill buckets with sand and seashells or plastic sand toys and place them around your party location. Another easy decoration is silk tropical flowers, or create your own with construction paper and hang them around the party area.

Any of these ideas can be used in conjunction with each other to develop a little slice of paradise perfect for your Hawaiian party.
