Create A Hawaiian Room

Hawaiian decor makes you feel like you are still on vacation.

The best way to bring the Hawaiian islands home with you is to create a Hawaiian room in your own home. Every time you enter, you will remember the soft ocean breezes, the hula dancers, and the lush fruits you ate at every meal. The vivacious colors and natural materials are the basis of such a room. It will put you in a perpetual vacation mood. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose a color pallet of three to five colors. Using a bright color for all your walls can be a bit glaring, so use a softer hue for them. However, you can choose a bright color for a focal wall. Then use accents of that bright color throughout the room in smaller doses. Choose among colors such as sand yellow, sky or ocean blue, bright yellow, red, orange or grass green.

2. Select furnishings made of natural materials, such as bamboo, rattan or teak wood. The feel of the room should be natural, but light and airy. Pick cushions or pillows for the furniture in Hawaiian prints or depicting Hawaiian flowers or plants.

3. Place sea-grass mats to define the different areas of the room, rather than heavy carpets and rugs.

4. Add living plants to the room to recreate the lush setting that abounds in Hawaii. Use potted palms and ferns. Use natural containers, such as baskets or clay pots.

5. Fill the walls with photos or paintings of Hawaiian scenery. Perhaps, enlarge vacation photos from your trip. Glue sea shells onto the frame of an old mirror. Create a shadow box of treasures you brought back from your Hawaii vacation. Make a display of starfish, coral and sand dollars. Place it in a flat basket or terra cotta plant saucer.

6. Add a saltwater fish tank, with bright tropical fish or lean a surfboard or two against your focal point wall.

7. Hang white plantation shutters, or wood or bamboo blinds on the windows. Keep the blinds or shutters open most of the time. The natural lighting will add to the overall tropical effect. For artificial lighting, choose lamps made from driftwood or wrought iron.

8. Place sea-scented candles or potpourri in the room to offer a tropical scent.
