Decorate Cakes With Gel

Gel frosting helps create intricate patterns in your cake design.

Gel frosting is commonly used for decorating cakes with intricate designs that require a precise touch. Knowing use gel frosting isn't that difficult and it gives you the opportunity to save money by decorating your own cakes instead of ordering them from bakeries. Decorating cakes with gel frosting allows you the time to experiment with a wide spectrum of colors and flavors.

Instructions

1. Frost your cake as you normally would using your choice of fluffy frosting.

2. Place a few gum-paste flowers or other shapes around the edges of the top of the cake to add texture to a cake's decor.

3. Squeeze a line of gel along the circumference of the cake at the bottom. Repeat this step on the top of the cake, connecting each gum-paste ornament with a line of gel.

4. Squeeze a fine layer of the gel over the plain, white parts of the gum-paste decorations that you want colored. For example, gum-paste roses can have their leaves colored in with green gel, and their petals colored in with pink, red or yellow gel frosting.

5. Squeeze the gel to form a name, date or other message in the center of the cake.
