Decorate A Hawaiian Home

Incorporate tropical flowers into your Hawaiian decor.

Whether you live on one of the Hawaiian Islands, or you live on the mainland and want to turn your home into a tropical Hawaiian-inspired paradise, there are several ways to bring an island vibe into your home. Hawaiian decor is inspired by the natural beauty of the tropical islands, which is reflected in the colors, furnishings and decorative accents of the home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Select paint colors for your home. Use either bold colors inspired by the waters and flora of the islands or neutral colors that serve as a backdrop for bold linens and decorative accents. If you are interested in bold paint, consider turquoise blue, orange, red, yellow and green. If you opt for the more muted tones, tan, beige, pale yellow or sage green are some paint color considerations.

2. Pick out furniture pieces made from natural materials. Bamboo, mahogany, wicker and rattan are all materials that are commonly used for furnishings in Hawaiian homes. In a bedroom, a mahogany headboard accented with detailed carvings will make your bed the focal point of the room. A kitchen or dining table made of bamboo or wicker and topped with glass suit the Hawaiian style well. In the living room, use a rattan sofa with upholstered cushions.

3. Select fabrics for your home. Stray away from heavy materials, such as silk, satin and velvet and instead choose light and airy fabrics, such as jute, cotton or linen. Choose a combination of solid colors and fabrics printed with Hawaiian-themed prints. For example, dress your bed with a cotton comforter that features hibiscus or pineapple prints and cover the windows with solid-colored linen curtains. If a busy printed comforter isn't what you're after, try a solid cotton comforter and accent it with throw pillows that feature an image of a single palm tree.

4. Add Hawaiian-inspired decorative accents to your home. Potted plants, such as ferns, orchids or birds-of-paradise bring the natural beauty of the Hawaiian Islands inside. Vases filled with fresh cut plumeria are not only visually appealing, but bring an intoxicating aroma into the home. Cover the floors with jute area rugs. Fill glass vases with seashells and beach glass and set them on tables, dressers or shelves. Hang prints of tropical beaches or close up images of tropical flowers on the walls. Tiki masks also make interesting wall art. Ceiling fans with large, leaf-shaped blades keep the space cool and add a touch of Hawaiian style to the ceiling.
