Have a Luau Theme Birthday Party
Coming up with a theme for your teen's birthday party can be difficult. Gone are the days of face painting and musical chairs. Many ideas for teens and older children can be costly and time consuming, requiring you to rent a location or spend a wad of dough on entertainment. However, you can still plan a party for your older child that is fun for him and frugal for you. These steps will help you throw a luau that will not embarrass your teen or break your bank. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Purchase inexpensive flip flops at a dollar or discount store--a single thong for each guest. Write your party details on each flip flop and hand deliver them to guests, or mail them in manila envelopes.
2. Decorate with lots of tiki torches. Prop a surfboard up and hang a "Happy Birthday" banner from it, or cut one from a large piece of cardboard. Check dollar, discount and thrift stores for anything tropical to decorate with. Wrap grass skirts around tables, set pink flamingos and inflatable palm trees in the yard, and play Hawaiian music on a laptop using a free streaming music website.
3. Hand each guest a floral lei and a name tag with her Hawaiian name on it. The teens might balk at first, but let them get warmed up and chances are they'll get a kick out if it.
4. Play the limbo game using a broomstick. Hold a hula dancing contest and a water balloon toss. Have guests place a wet sponge between their knees and have a race to see who can drop theirs in a bucket first.
5. Serve fruit smoothies, pineapple juice and tropical punch. If you can get ahold of coconut shell cups, that is even better. Any kind of kabobs, be it fruit, veggie or grilled meat, are great luau food. Standard munchies like chips and dips will also be appreciated. For the birthday cake, decorate flat sheet cake with tropical flowers or a dashboard hula girl.
