Make A Hawaiian Luau

Hire Hawaiian entertainers for your luau.

Whether you are celebrating a graduation, engagement or any other special event, a luau is a creative and entertaining theme for the party. The Hawaiian luau came about in the early 1800s when the King of Hawaii started having feasts where men and women of any status could attend and celebrate. Although not nearly as big as the ones the royal Hawaiians put on, modern luaus still bring people together for traditional Hawaiian food and entertainment. To create your own luau, you'll need to turn an outdoor space into a Hawaiian oasis, complete with a whole pig and hula dancers. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Set the scene. You first need an spacious outdoor area for the luau, such as a backyard. Order palm trees if you are not in a climate that has them naturally to set around your backyard. If your budget doesn't allow for real palm trees, you can purchase fake plastic trees instead. Place tropical flowers on at every table as a centerpiece, as well as hang them from fences and posts. Set up tiki torches all around the area and line each table with grass skirt trim, include the buffet table.

2. Plan luau-themed foods. Serve as much authentic luau food as you can. The most important food element to a luau is the Kahlua pig. Traditionally the pig is wrapped in Hawaiian ti leaves and cooked in an underground pit known as an imu for several hours. If you cannot create an imu pit in your backyard, you can roast a whole pig on a spit above ground or simply smoke a pork butt. Other foods typically served at a luau include poi, which is a pudding made of taro root, lomi lomi salmon, a cold salmon salad made with tomatoes and onions, and laulau, which is chick, beef or pork steam cooked in ti leaves. You should also have a tiki bar serving up mai tai and other tropical drinks.

3. Hire Hawaiian entertainers. Have Hawaiian music playing in the background, but if possible, hire Hawaiian hula dancers to create a more authentic feel. They can also teach your guests hula. Other Hawaiian entertainment includes ukulele players and fire eaters. You could also have someone dressed as a Hawaiian royal greet all of your guests and put a lei around their necks when they arrive to the party.
