Hawaiian Travel Tips

The Hawaiian Islands were formed from volcanic ash and lava.

The state of Hawaii is comprised of a chain of islands. People inhabit eight of the Hawaiian Islands and other, smaller islets are home to beautiful flora and fauna. The six major Hawaiian Islands include Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island, which is officially Hawaii; however, locals call it the "Big Island" to distinguish it since all islands are part of the state of Hawaii.

Climate

The Hawaiian climate is generally mild; however, there is a rainy season from October through March, which also brings cooler temperatures ranging from the low 60s to mid 70s. Temperatures the rest of the year range from the low 70s to mid 80s. Travelers visiting Hawaii during the rainy season may want to bring a light jacket for cooler nights and an umbrella for daytime showers.

Island Hopping

Hawaii's major airport is Honolulu International Airport, located on the island of Oahu. However, each of the six other main Hawaiian Islands has its own airport that accommodates flights between the islands. Travelers who want to visit the different islands of Hawaii can do so through scheduled inter-island flights or rent a private air taxi ride. Inter-island flight times range from 20 to 45 minutes.

Outdoor Scenery

Hawaii is home to beautiful beaches, active volcanoes, sea cliff mountains and vegetated rainforests. Travelers who want to see it all can go on guided eco tours by foot, ATV, horseback, boat or plane. Many visitors rent jeeps or other four-wheel drive vehicles and explore the islands on their own. Travelers looking to learn about Hawaii's culture should go to an authentic luau, take hula or surfing lessons, or learn to make Hawaiian lei.

Hot Spots

In addition to the great outdoors, Hawaii is home to wonderful restaurants, exciting nightlife, unique shops and great works of art. Oahu was once home to Polynesian royalty before becoming the fiftieth state and has many historical sites. The island of Maui is where most of the locals live and home to restaurants that serve traditional Polynesian cuisine. Numerous resorts, dance clubs and shopping malls are located on Hawaii's Big Island, which is the most "touristy" of them all.
