Hawaiian Luau Party Foods

Incorporate tropical flavors into your luau.

Luau parties allow guests the opportunity to imagine themselves on the tropical island of Hawaii, even if their actual location fails to hold the same charm. With some simple leis and Hawaiian skirts, along with regional food, you can set the scene for you luau. Create Hawaiian-themed food with just a few modifications to some simple recipes and the addition of some classic tropical flavors. Does this Spark an idea?

Fruit Salad

Fresh fruit proliferates on the Hawaiian islands. Capture the island feel at your party by creating a fresh fruit salad. Produce a tropically flavored mix by adding papayas, pineapple and bananas to your fruit assortment. While you want to include as many Hawaii-specific fruits as you can, it is permissible to add some fruits produced in the contiguous U.S. instead of on the island itself. You should, however, stay away from distinctively un-tropical fruits like apples, as these will remove some of the tropical flare from your salad.

Ham and Pineapple Kabobs

Simple finger foods make for easy party dining. At your luau, offer ham and pineapple kabobs. Both of these foods are prominent in many Hawaiian dishes. To make your kabobs, cut precooked ham and pineapple into large chunks. Skewer these chunks with disposable wooden or metal kabob skewers. Using a basting brush, spread some orange marmalade along your skewered kabobs. Place each kabob on the grill to heat and caramelize. Allow the kabob to cook for roughly three minutes, and then flip. Serve these tasty treats piping hot from the grill.

Ginger Pineapple Meatballs

Turn your favorite meatball recipe into a Hawaiian delight. Using ground beef, pork or poultry, mix up meatballs. Add all of the normal ingredients that you could find in any standard recipe, including breadcrumbs, onions and eggs. After you have produced your typical meatball mix, add some Hawaiian flare by mixing in drained crushed pineapple and a tablespoon of ginger. Mix well to ensure that the ingredients are evenly distributed. Roll you mixture into balls, and place on a baking tray. Put it in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes. After you remove your cooked meatballs, place them in a slow cooker with some honey barbecue sauce. The sauce will moisten the treats and keep them from drying out. Allow guests to serve themselves from the cooker, or walk around with meatballs on toothpicks, offering the treats to your guests for their enjoyment.

Hawaiian Cake

Turn a boring box cake into a Luau delight with the addition of only a few simple ingredients. To make your Hawaiian cake, purchase a white boxed cake mix. Add the requested number of eggs, but instead of oil or water, add a 12-oz. can of crushed pineapple, along with the juices. Spice it up with 2 tbsp. of your favorite rum, and then mix well. Pour your cake batter into a greased bunt cake pan, and bake according to the package directions. Before your party, pop the cake out onto a plate. This moist and delicious Hawaiian-themed treat will delight your guests.
