Make A Real Flower Lei

Saltgal at Flickr

Real flower leis evoke thoughts of Hawaii's sandy beaches, cool breezes and hula girls with tropical flowers adorning their necks. Although tropical flowers may be difficult to find in the homeland states, when you do the expense is quite high. A beautiful real flower lei can be made with carnations. The scent of the carnation is appealing and fresh, which will make the wearer of the lei feel joyful and a little bit Hawaiian.

Instructions

1. Buy your needed supplies. These include a ball of No. 10 cotton crochet thread, a large-eyed needle and 30 fresh carnations for each loosely strung 40-inch lei. If you want a tighter flower arrangement, buy 50 carnations for each lei. Make arrangements with a florist to order the needed carnations.

2. Cut the stems off the carnations.

3. String your needle with a double length and tie a knot at the end to hold the two strands. The double length of crochet thread, on the needle, should measure 40 inches.

4. Poke the bottom of the carnation through the center and pull it down to the knot. Continue stringing the carnations until you have nearly come to the end of the thread. Run the needle and thread through the beginning knot several times, until the hold is firm.
