Make A Hawaiian Dollar Lei

Make a dollar lei to celebrate with loved ones and give them the gift of cash.

A Hawaiian dollar lei follows the tradition of offering money to the guest of honor in a decorative and ceremonial way. The money can be collected beforehand or collected at the party and assembled into a wearable lei for the guest of honor. Once finished, the lei looks fluffy and is full of dollar bills that resemble flowers on a flower lei. Create leis for your loved ones for graduation parties, birthdays, weddings or baby showers.

Instructions

1. Count your dollar bills to determine how many lengths of ribbon you need. Cut one 6-inch piece of ribbon for each dollar bill you are using.

2. Cut another length of ribbon 12 inches longer than the length that you want the lei to be. This will give you extra tying room.

3. Fold each dollar bill like an accordion. To do this, fold one short end up 1/4-inch, flip the bill and fold the newly folded edge back by 1/4 inch. Continue flipping and folding until the dollar becomes a folded flat strip.

4. Tie a 6-inch piece of ribbon around the center of each bill tightly. Fan out the edges of the bills by unfolding them on each side of the ribbon tied around them.

5. Tie the ends of the knotted ribbons, from around each dollar, around the longer ribbon you cut for your lei. Do not cut off the excess ribbon, as they add to the look of the finished lei.

6. Curl the ends of the ribbon by scraping across them with scissors if you like.

7. Knot the ends of the lei together and curl the excess ribbon ends to match the rest of the lei.
