Dress Like Mulan

The classic Mulan kimono is most recognizable in pink, like the Disney character.

Long before Mulan appeared on the big screen, she was the central character in a cherished Chinese folktale. The famed ballad of Mulan describes a fearless female warrior who lived sometime between 1300 and 1600 A.D. In recent years, Disney presented this inspiring character to a new generation of children, along with countless costumes, dolls and DVDs. Dressing like Mulan -- whether it's for Halloween or a Disney character party -- isn't difficult, but it does require some creativity and inventive fabric draping.

Instructions

1. Put on the oversized silk shirt. The roomy size lets the underarms hang low, so it resembles the loose, flowing appearance of a kimono. Of course, if you have an authentic pink, silk kimono, wear that instead.

2. Wrap the skirt high around your waist, tucking in the shirt so the core of your body forms a straight line.

3. Tie the blue sash around the bust for a small child or around the waist for an adult. The sash must conceal any seams indicating a separation between the shirt and skirt. Finish tying the sash in a knot, and tuck the remaining fabric back into the blue sash.

4. Pull your hair into a bun at the crown of your head, and secure its position with hairpins and an elastic hair band. Stick a chopstick behind the bun, so it sits diagonally between the bun and your scalp.
