A pig roast can be decorated with traditional luau fare
Pig roasts are enjoyed in backyards and barbecues, but especially as a part of a luau. The iconic image of a whole roasted pig sitting on a table is often coupled by a Hawaiian luau theme. While you could simply roast a pig and have no special decorations, having decorations is more fun and surprisingly little work. Many of the decorations can be saved and used over and over again, saving you money in the long run in case you want to have future pig roasts with a theme. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Instructions
1. Place an apple in the pig's mouth. This is the usual way that the pig itself is decorated, though apples are seasonal. If they are not available, try an orange or other round fruit that is in season.
2. Make table centerpieces with tropical fruits and flowers. The usual flowers that say luau are called plumerias, though lilies or other flowers may also be used if plumerias can't be found. Silk plumerias are great because they won't wilt in the sun and can be reused, but real ones are fine as well.
3. Place tiki torches around the yard or area that will be the site of the pig roast. Tiki torches give a decidedly Hawaiian feel. Many tiki torches come with special candles like citronella which help keep away bugs, giving them an added function beyond just decoration.
4. Place a lei at each seat. If you have put out tables, place a lei for each seat at that table, whether it is a bench or a chair. Guests can put the leis on for a luau feel. Again, leis with silk or synthetic flowers are easier, but real flower leis can be used as well.
5. Spread loose blooms all across the tables, including the food table holding the roasted pig. Put individual blooms out at the tables so women can put them in their hair and men can put them in a pocket. Have hair pins and safety pins ready in case anyone needs them to secure the flowers to their jackets, clothing or hair.
