A tropical cake is a great party centerpiece.
A tropical-themed cake can be a great dessert for a birthday, summertime celebration or holiday. This colorful creation will add great decor to the party as well as provide a tasty treat for guests. Tropical cakes can be decorated a number of ways to help personalize the party. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Instructions
1. Bake the cake. You can use any flavor you would like and you can make it any size you wish. It can be a circular cake with one or more tiers or a large rectangular cake.
2. Let the cake cool completely before frosting or decorating.
3. Decide if you would like to frost the cake with traditional icing or if you would like to use fondant as the coating. Fondant can be purchased ready-made at most craft stores and party stores. Frosting can also be purchased ready-made, or you can make your own.
4. Use food coloring to create the colored frosting that you want. Use blue to symbolize the ocean, and red and orange to symbolize a tropical sunset. You can frost different sections of the cake in different colors.
5. If you use fondant on the cake, you can add food coloring to the fondant in the same way as the frosting. If your cake is more than one tier, you can use different colors of fondant. If your cake is only one level you'll need to decide on one color. Fondant has to be placed on the cake in one sheet and you won't be able to blend different sheets of fondant together on one layer.
6. Frost the cake or cover with the fondant according to the package directions. Make sure the cake is completely covered and the surface is smooth.
7. Add your decorations to the cake however you wish. You can use plastic palm trees, real flowers or flowers made of fondant. Tropical themes are usually very colorful so choose bright and bold colors that make you think of sunsets, flowers, fruit or the beach.
