Decorate With A Striped Couch

Stripes as a pattern suggest a number of different themes. A pin stripe gives the impression of old business and tradition. Broad stripes hearken back to days spent on the beach in over-sized striped swimming costumes. If you love stripes and have found a striped couch and you can't live without it, embrace its boldness and plan your living room or den decor around it. The couch itself can help you make decorating decisions along the way and bring this room focal point to life. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use the couch as the basis for your color scheme. If the couch has more than one color of stripes, choose one color as the main color in your color scheme. The other colors should become accent colors.

2. Make an accent wall using one of the colors of your color scheme. Paint the wall with this color and leave the other walls around it white or neutral-colored. The accent wall draws your attention to the items around it, so be sure to position the couch next to this wall.

3. Anchor the couch to the floor visually with a solid area rug. Look for a rug that contrasts with the couch. For example, if you've got a dark pin-striped couch, think about a white area rug. This sets off the couch and make it stand out. In this way, the rug functions like a frame around a picture does; the picture become more noticeable because of the frame surrounding it.

4. Add a solid color to the couch by throwing a blanket over the back. Determine the type of blanket by the colors and/ or textures of the couch. For example, a wool afghan in one of the couch's colors would add some texture to a polished cotton couch.

5. Use your throw pillows if you want to introduce some other patterns, but keep in mind that the throw pillows should include the colors on your couch. More specifically, the main color of your color scheme should be the primary colors in your couch pillows. For example, if your couch has red and white stripes, add patterns like paisley or fleur-de-lis to the couch via the pillows, making sure that these patterns are red or white.

6. Gravitate toward solid-colored side chairs. The couch is really the focal point in the room, so don't make it compete with the other furniture. Instead, get one or two solid-colored chairs. These should feature the main color of your color scheme.

7. Play up a theme if one emerges. For example, a blue and white striped couch would work well in a nautical theme. This helps you choose the decorative accessories for the rest of the room. Otherwise, the accessories you choose should be chosen in part because they include the colors of your couch. These include items like decorative pottery, a painted coffee table or an ottoman.
