Draw The Hawaiian State Flower

Draw a yellow hibiscus flower.

Hawaii's state flower, the yellow hibiscus, has five colorful petals with stamen rising out from the center of the petals. In 1988 the yellow hibiscus flower, native to Hawaii, became the state flower. With a little practice, you can draw the Hawaiian state flower, sketching the frilly petals sitting atop a slender stalk. Add a bit of yellow color to the petals to finish your hibiscus flower.

Instructions

1. Sketch a very light circle sitting on top of a long stem to begin the foundation of your drawing. Make the circle about 4 inches in diameter, and the stem about 4 to 6 inches long beneath the circle. You will be sketching the petals over this circle and will be erasing these foundational lines, so make them very light.

2. Continue the line from the stem through the center of the circle, making it slant toward the 2 o'clock position if the circle was a clock face. This line will become the stamen.

3. Draw the first petal. Make this petal a center petal with the right edge of the petal the stamen line. Make the left edge of the petal a diagonal line at about 10 o'clock on the circle.

4. Make the next petal to the right of the first petal, using the stamen line as the left edge of this petal. Make the right edge of this petal at about the 3 o'clock line on the circle.

5. Draw the remaining three petals along the bottom half of the circle with each petal starting from the center of the circle. Divide the remaining space of the circle evenly between each of the three petals, making them end at rounded points along the bottom of the hibiscus.

6. Extend the stamen above the top point of the petals by about half an inch. Draw a small inverted triangle at the top of the stamen.

7. Erase the foundational circle and make the outlines of the petals a little wavy to give them a delicate edge.

8. Draw pointed leaves along the stem, making the edges serrated and jagged. Draw light veins in the leaves with the pencil.

9. Add yellow color to the petals and add a hint of pink or red to the center area of the flower. Fill in the stem and leaves with a medium green color.
