Create your own gaming adventure.
Whether you want to create your own platforming plumber game or craft a fantasy adventure that is anything but final, you can translate your ideas into a 2D game. Creating a 2D video game requires more than an idea. You will need to map out your game and then use a game creation program to flesh out your outline into a full gaming experience. Both gaming consoles and computers feature programs used for creating 2D games, so that gamers can try their hand and becoming amateur game developers.
Instructions
1. Choose the genre for your 2D games. This game can be a role playing game, a fighting game, a platformer, or any mix of genre. Look at available 2D games released on older consoles such as the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis for inspiration.
2. Outline your game. Decide on the characters, both good and evil, as well as the overall storyline of the game. For example, you may create a game where a princess must traverse several stages to rescue her kidnapped prince or a band of heroes who save the world from an evil corporation.
3. Design the levels for your game. Use graph paper and plan out each stage including the platforms, enemy locations, boss battles and items. If creating a platforming game, you will need to mark where the terrain raises and lowers along with platforms to jump on. Role playing games will need to include layout for dungeons and towns. Use these designs when creating the game levels with your chosen game program.
4. Draw the characters, enemies, and items for your game. Depending on the style of game you may want to create characters with a large amount of detail or vague sketches of their attributes.
5. Type a script for your game. This is only needed if you intend to have a storyline beyond a general task. The script should include dialogue for your playable characters, a possible narrator, as well as your villains and additional monsters or townspeople who may pop up during the course of the adventure. Include areas in the game where scripted battles will occur, such as after a conversation with a boss character.
6. Select the program you will use to create your game. Depending on your level of computer programming skill you will want to choose a program that is easy to use and still allows you to translate your ideas to the game. Console owners can use games like "Little Big Planet" and "Drawn to Life" to create platformers, while PC owners can use "Platform Studio."
7. Test your game several times for bugs. Progress through each level several times to ensure that you can reach every platform, enemies can be defeated and there are no exploits that can be used to bypass areas. Edit your game as needed remove these glitches.
