Decorate A Palm Tree For Christmas

Add Christmas cheer to a tropical palm tree.

Whether there is a palm tree in the front yard or a nicely potted one in the living room, decorating one for Christmas will add a unique touch to a traditional celebration. Palm trees can be decorated with something as simple as a few strands of lights or as elaborate as ornaments, presents and ribbon. It's easy to add a little Christmas spirit to a tropical plant. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. The first thing to do when decorating a palm tree for Christmas is add lights. You can use colored or white lights.

Start by wrapping the trunk of the tree with net lights in a solid color, such as white or green. If net lights are not available, carefully wrap the trunk in a spiral pattern starting at the bottom and working your way up to where the palm fronds begin.

2. Next, you should add color to the palm fronds by stringing some lights in the color of your choice around them. The lights can either be wrapped and woven through the fronds or attached with twist ties. Whichever method you use, make sure the lights are securely attached to prevent them from falling off or hanging from the fronds. They should be tightly attached, as if they are part of the tree.

3. If desired, add traditional Christmas decorations. This can be an assortment of items, including large ornaments or decorated gift boxes hanging from the tree. These items, if large enough, can also be placed on the ground at the base of the trunk.

The tree, if it is indoors, can also be decorated with garland or ribbon. If using garland, weave the garland through the palm fronds and around the outer side. The best way to decorate the tree with ribbon is to tie bows and randomly place them on the ends of the palm fronds. Or tie a big bow around the trunk of the tree.

4. If you want to stick to a tropical theme, decorate your tree with beach items. For example, get some flip flops and sunglasses from a local dollar store. These items can be painted and decorated with holiday themes, such as ornaments, wreaths, holly and presents. Use ribbon or fish line to attach item to the tree.

If the tree will be indoors, add to the tropical decorations and instead of ribbon or garland, string leis around the tree. Other tropical items can include surfboards, beach blankets and beach balls.

5. If the tree is outside, make sure the extension cord is properly secured to the ground. This is especially necessary if the tree is a long distance from the electrical outlet. Also make sure all plugs are completely plugged in and there are no exposed electrical wires.

If the tree is indoors, make sure all plugs are secure and the extension cord is not lying somewhere the kids, pets or other adults can trip over it.
