Make A Cake Using Fondant

Fondant cakes make cakes look amazing.


Making a cake using fondant is a moderately easy way to decorate a cake. Fondant creates a smooth, flat surface on a cake. Mainly used for decorating cakes for special occasions, fondant is a type of icing that completely transforms cakes. Fondant is composed of gelatin and confectioner's sugar, and it is used in a variety of cake-decorating techniques. When formed into shapes and sizes, fondant creates dimensional objects as well as simple cake patterns. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Bake your favorite cake. Use a cake recipe that you enjoy, or even bake a cake from a box. Place a cake pan underneath the cake before you begin preparing the cake for the fondant to prevent the cake from moving.


2. Prepare the cake with buttercream icing. Allow the cake to cool completely before coating it with icing. Place the cake in the refrigerator for two hours to ensure that it is cooled completely.


3. Purchase packaged fondant or make the fondant with your own ingredients. Choose to purchase fondant that is already colored, or apply the color yourself by adding icing paste with a toothpick to a ball of fondant and kneading it into the fondant dough.


4. Knead fondant until it becomes smooth and soft. Make sure that the fondant is at room temperature before using it on your cake. Use a solid work surface that will not cause the fondant to stick or crack by sprinkling cornstarch on the surface.


5. Roll the fondant out with a rolling pin. Spread the fondant until it is 1/4 in. thick. Remove air bubbles in the fondant by poking them with a toothpick. Roll the fondant out larger than the cake or cake tier. Try to ensure that the fondant is at least 4-8 in. larger than the cake.


6. Place the fondant, with the shiny side facing up, onto the cake quickly. The fondant will dry fast. It is vital to place the fondant immediately on the cake as soon as you finish rolling the fondant. Use both hands gently but quickly to place the fondant on the cake. The icing will cause the fondant to stick to the cake.


7. Push the fondant onto the cake, and smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles. Add cornstarch to your hands to prevent it from sticking.


8. Cut away any excess fondant. Use leftover fondant again if you are applying it to another cake tier. Store fondant in a covered container at room temperature or place the fondant in the refrigerator to store it longer. Place leftover fondant in a pastry bag, and decorate the cake with dots, lines or any type of design.


9. Use fondant to create shapes and decorations for your cake. Cut fondant out with cookie cutters, roll it into balls, and even shape the fondant by hand to the desired size and shape to create dimensional objects. Add royal icing to accent the fondant.
