Decorate A Room Hawaiian Style

Get inspiration from vintage Hawaiian print shirts.

Decorate any room of your house with some tropical flare, even if you're thousands of miles away from the islands. Hand pick Hawaiian-style accents for an island feel, rather than overloading the senses with top-to-bottom kitsch. The right tropical touches will convey the laid-back feel of the islands in your own home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Select a tropical print that you like, then use it to make accent pillows or chair cushions. Display the pillows on a solid-colored sofa in a complementary color. Repeat a color from the print in window and floor coverings.

2. Display an intricately stitched Hawaiian quilt as a bedspread, wall hanging or throw for your sofa. Or purchase Hawaiian quilt pillows, seat cushions and oven mitts.

3. Choose rattan, wicker, bamboo, teak or other tropical wood furniture. Select matching accessories, such as paddle fans and lamps. Koa wood bowls and carvings instantly give any room a Hawaiian feel.

4. Place other decorative items reminiscent of Hawaii around the room. Shop for ukuleles, bamboo lamps and candle holders, outrigger canoe paddles, surfboards or tropical sculptures.

5. Add tropical foliage, such as a palm or other broad-leafed tropical plant. Vibrant orchids and birds of paradise will evoke a tropical rain forest.

6. Hang artwork that is reminiscent of the islands. Order Hawaiian post cards and prints online and display them in bamboo frames. Or add color with vibrant beach or floral paintings.
