Decorate An Elmo Birthday Cake

If you have a little kid in the family, then you know who Elmo is. This lovable character from the popular television show "Sesame Street" has captured the heart of many a young child. If your son or daughter has a birthday coming up and you want to make something really special, try an Elmo cake that is bound to make guests smile--kids and adults alike. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Prepare cake according to the instructions on the box and pour mixture into Elmo pan. Bake according to the time noted on the box.

2. Remove cake from oven and allow to cool completely.

3. Divide vanilla frosting into four bowls, placing the majority in one bowl and only small amounts of frosting in the three remaining bowls.

4. Add a few drops of red food coloring to the bowl with the largest amount of frosting and mix. Repeat as necessary until the frosting is the bright red color of Elmo's fur.

5. Dye one of the other bowls of frosting orange and one of them black. Leave one bowl white.

6. Create eyes on Elmo's face with white frosting in the place where his eyes should be, referring to Elmo's picture and spreading the frosting with a spatula.

7. Draw his nose in the center of the cake using the orange frosting.

8. Create a wide, smiling mouth at the bottom of the cake with the black frosting.

9. Add one small circle of black frosting in the center of each eye, taking care not to smudge the white frosting underneath.

10. Fill the star-shaped piping bag with red frosting. Gently squeeze the piping bag to fill in the remaining surface of the cake with small, red stars, avoiding the areas that are already frosted with the other colors.
