Find A Firearm Serial Number

Learn find a firearm serial number.


Owning a firearm is a right protected by the Second Amendment of the Constitution and comes with responsibility. The responsibility includes the safe handling and operation of the firearm under federal, state and local laws. For security and inventory purposes, firearms are stamped with serial numbers, and sometimes this number is etched or stamped in several locations. This is to deter theft, keep accountability and used by law enforcement help to locate a lost or stolen firearm or its owner.


Instructions


1. Look under the barrel of the firearm--typically a handgun--to locate the serial number. On newer models of semi-automatic handguns, the serial number may be accompanied by a bar code and may include letters and numbers


2. Open the cylinder of the firearm--for revolvers--and look underneath the upper frame to locate the serial number or look on the top of the bottom frame, just above the trigger.


3. Locate the serial number on the upper receiver for rifles or shotguns. This is usually visible near the ejection port, on top or on the side of the upper receiver.


4. Look for the serial number above the hand grip. Numerous weapons have the serial number stamped near the trigger, above the hand grip.


5. Look for the serial number on the end of the butt stock or above or inside the magazine well for some semi-automatic rifles, including assault rifles.
