Homemade Disney Costume

Homemade Tinkerbell and Peter Pan costumes

Though Disney costumes are sold in stores and online, they can become pricey. However, most Disney costumes only contain a few simple elements. If you can sew, or even buy fabric glue and glue fabric together, you can make these costumes at home for a fraction of the price.

Disney Princess

Most little girls have an idea in mind when it comes to Disney costumes: Disney Princesses. The princess your little girl chooses to be will determine the color of fabric you need: yellow for Bell from Beauty and the Beast, blue for Cinderella, pink for Princess Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, and so on. If you are lucky, you may be able to find a matching short sleeve shirt and full skirt that won't require any sewing. If you are unable to find a full skirt in your daughter's size, look in the junior's department. Though you may have to take the waistline in, the length of a knee-length junior skirt may be full length for a younger girl. Search mall jewelry stores such as Icing or Claire's to find tiaras, wands, and other accessories.

Tinkerbell and Peter Pan

The characters from Peter Pan can provide good costume ideas for both boys and girls. To make a Peter Pan costume, find a pair of green tights, and a green oversized T-shirt. Cut the t-shirt to look tattered around the sleeves, neckline, and bottom. Use a belt to cinch in the shirt, and buy brown felt to cover the top of any pair of shoes to look like booties. Roll green felt into a cone shape and attach a red feather. Buy a plastic dagger from a costume store to complete the look. For Tinker Bell, all you need is a green dress. If you don't have access to a green dress, search local thrift stores, or even use a tight fitting green t-shirt and cut the sleeves and neckline to look like Tinkerbell's dress. You can purchase wings at any Halloween store, or even make them using cardboard, white paint, and glitter. Pile her hair into a high ponytail on her head, and you have an easy, homemade costume.

Alice in Wonderland

Making Alice in Wonderland costumes at home can be very simple. To transform your child into Alice, search your child's wardrobe for a blue dress, or a blue shirt and blue skirt. The colors don't have to be exact, as long as they compliment each other. You can also search thrift stores for these items, or even your own closet if you are able to sew to make them smaller. Complete the outfit with a plain white apron that ties around the neck and waist, a black ribbon for her hair, and a pair of white tights. Another fun Alice in Wonderland costume is the Cheshire Cat. Buy your child a purple sweat suit, and then glue or sew on strips of pink fabric or ribbon, forming horizontal stripes up and down the shirt and pants. Complete the look with cat ears, and painting the top half of your child's face purple from the nose up. Paint on whiskers and a purple nose, and he will look just like he stepped out of Wonderland.
