Homemade Luau Party Idea

Use leis as decorations and party favors.

Hosting a luau party for your friends and family can make for a memorable summer get-together. Enlist the help of your family and friends to come up with ideas, and keep an open mind while browsing material at the library and Internet. Make up a new game like bobbing in Jello for baggies of candy, fruit and toys. Most importantly, complete party preparations early so you can enjoy the luau. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Make luau invitations. Purchase plastic bottles, umbrella toothpicks and stationery with a beach and sun setting on it. Write the party details on the invitations; include the time and date and location of the party. Roll the paper up and place it in the bottle along with an umbrella toothpick and a small novelty toy.

2. Cover each table with orange, blue and yellow plastic tablecloths. Put palm tree fronds on the table for added texture and visual appeal. They can also work as placemats and hot pads as you begin placing dishes on the table.

3. Hang paper lanterns on twine and drape them around the party area. Put tiki torches in strategic positions to light the area at night. Carefully remove the pineapple flesh from inside the pineapple similar to the way you would clean a pumpkin when making a jack-o-lantern. Cut a design similar to a tiki face out of the pineapple’s shell. Place votive candles inside for cheap, but cute candle centerpieces.

4. Make a greeting table where guests entering the party area are able to pick up coconut bras, grass skirts, leis, bug spray and straw hats.

5. Feed guests grilled meat which has been marinated in equal amounts of blood orange juice and soy sauce with a few teaspoons of fresh grated ginger. Set up trays of fresh fruit and an adult bowl filled with fruit soaked in pineapple rum. Have both non-alcoholic and alcoholic margarita and daiquiri stations where guests can have constant access to fancy drinks. Fill a kiddy pool with ice, bottles of water and soda and bright-colored plastic tiki head toys.
