Hawaiian Theme Ideas

Hawaiian-themed parties can be tons of fun.

Many people don their Hawaiian shirts year-round, but what better way to get a taste of Hawaii without actually going to the island than having a Hawaiian-themed party? After you've decided to throw the party, it's time to pick out a few activities and decorations that will make your bash a success. This party can be popular in the summer when the outdoors are available for lounging. You might also use this theme to warm up your cooler winter months. Either way, throwing a Hawaiian-themed party can be a lot of fun. Does this Spark an idea?

Invitations

Shaping and coloring your invitation like it's a Hawaiian shirt can be a bit of work, but it's also fun. Sprinkle hibiscus flower pedals inside or glue them on the invitation to get your invitees into the spirit. Add humor by drawing cartoon versions of your guests' faces or adding cutout photos on your invitations. Place those on cartoon or cutout photos of Luau men and women. Ask in your invitations for your guests to dress in Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts or summer dresses.

Supplies and Decorations

Place inflatable palm tress, pink flamingos and colorful balloons outside your home. There will be no missing your address. Put a basket of leis near the entrance so everyone receives one when they enter your home. Greet every guest with an "aloha" and place a lei over their head. Brightly colored banners, garlands and other scene-setters that are available at online retailers as well as from party supply stores can really set the tone. Play a CD of island music to add to the atmosphere. Use raffia table skirts in tropical colors. Throw yellow, orange, green and deep pink confetti around your home. Decorate your drinking glasses with cocktail umbrellas.

Activities

Practice the limbo and the hula before the party so you can teach your guests. Play luau music and hold limbo and hula contests. Give away Hawaiian-themed prizes for the best dancers, such as limbo kits and hula hoops. Set up a limbo and hula hoop obstacle course if you are hosting your party outside.

Party Favors

Party favors can top off your Hawaiian-themed party while adding a personal touch. Tropical print bandannas, fluorescent necklaces and comedy glasses are cheerful and cheap. Take photos of your guests with a digital camera and print them on a photo printer. Give them to your guests for a lasting memory.
