Choose a hair color that complements your skin tone.
Choosing the right color is about more than just picking a color you find desirable. You also want one that flatters you by taking your skin tone, clothing colors and personal characteristics into account. Whether you are going for a temporary color that will last a week to a permanent color, you want to make sure you are selecting a hair color you are comfortable with and willing to maintain. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Decide what kind of commitment you want to have to your hair color such as temporary, semi-temporary or permanent. If you are unsure how long you want the color for, choose a temporary hair dye so it will wash out in a week or two. Choose the method in which you will have your hair colored; either by doing it yourself at home or with a friend, or having a professional salon dye it.
2. Take your skin tone and what colors look best on you into consideration. For instance, someone with a cool skin tone looks good with a burgundy red but not a gold or bronze color. If you are unsure of your skin tone, look to your wardrobe for help. If you find yourself with red, orange and yellow clothing to complement your coloring, you are most likely a warm skin tone and will look best with auburn, chestnut or chocolate brown hair.
3. Decide how much maintenance you are willing to do after you get your hair colored. Brunette hair colors require little upkeep while blonde, on the other hand, will need to be touched up and lightened regularly.
4. Choose what shade you want your color to be compared to your natural color. If you are going lighter, you have more room to correct any mistakes, as it is easier to darken a color than it is to lighten a color. Do a strand test before dyeing all of your hair to determine if the color suits you. Take a few strands of hair and dye them the color you have chosen. Once the dye has been rinsed and dried, hold it up to your face and see if the color suits you.
5. Read the box of hair dye carefully if you are going to color your hair at home. There will be a diagram which shows what the end result should be from your starting color.
