Create An Avatar And Room On Google Lively

Google Lively is a 3D-chat world used to meet with friends and to make new ones. Lively pages can be embedded in other webpages, allowing you can hang out with your friends in a variety of venues. You can create your own room in which to visit, go to your friends' rooms or wander into the rooms of strangers. Wherever you end up, however, you need an Avatar to represent yourself. You can clothe your Avatar to fit your personality and make it look different in every room--even an avatar you create yourself.

Instructions

Create an Avatar

1. Sign in to your Google Account using the link at the top of the Lively page. If you do not already have a Google account, you will be prompted to create one at this time.

2. Choose a room to visit. Rooms are listed on the sidebar. You can create a new room, join a friend's room or visit a new room. Once in the room, you'll be able to customize your Avatar.

3. Login as prompted and enter your desired screen name. Choose wisely because you will not be able to change this name. When you log in, the room will appear as will a sidebar allowing you to create an Avatar.

4. Click the Avatar icon and choose the avatar that best fits your personality. Click on the "Select Avatar" link.

5. Clothe your Avatar using the wardrobe icon. It looks like a hanger. Click on it and the "My Wardrobe" menu will open. Use the drop-down menu to choose a type of clothing (i.e. dresses, pants, tops, etc.) and use the side arrows to browse the available choices. When you find something you like, click on the picture and the "Wear Item" link. It will appear on your avatar.

6. Add more clothing to your closet using the "Shop For More" link or, if you don't want to fuss with dressing your avatar, click on the "I'm Feeling Lucky" link. You'll be outfitted randomly and automatically.

7. Begin interacting with other people in the room now that you have a presence with which to do so. Click-and-drag your avatar around the room. Depending on how quickly you move you'll either be a ghostly presence floating through furniture or a clumsy oaf bumping into it.

8. Move to a piece of furniture by clicking on the object and selecting "Move To." You can also sit your avatar down on furniture that is typically used for reposing, such as couches and chairs, by double clicking on the piece. You're then ready to have a serious chat with your buddies!

Build a Room

9. Choose the "Create a Room" link in the main Google Lively window. Your avatar will materialize in an empty room and a pop-up window will appear asking for you to create room property details.

10. Give your room a title and description, decide whether or not to make it available to all Lively users and make note of the URL. You can send it to your friends so they can get to your room directly. You'll also need to choose who can decorate the room. Your options to allow the Public to create and move objects, to allow the Public to move objects or to make it Private (only you can move or add objects).

11. Click on the "Web Pages" tab to get the HTML code that can be used to embed your room in another Web page. This adds to the interactive experience of Google Lively, since it means people can use the 3D chat service outside of the Google Lively walls.

12. Use the "Sounds" tab to add music to play in your room. You can upload your own music or browse the available library. Click "Save Changes" when you're done.

13. Navigate to the "Shells" tab to choose a general look for your room. This is essentially the outside view and shape. If you don't see one you like, click on "Shop for Shells" to see more options in the catalog. Again, once you've found the one you want, click "Save Changes."

14. Click on the "New Room" icon in the toolbar to edit your room or make a new one. Then, click the "Furniture" icon to see a catalog of available objects. Choose what looks good to you, click on it and select "Add to Room" from the pop-up dialog. When you have the objects and furniture you want, use the "Move Furniture" icon (it looks like crossed arrows) to place it.

15. Invite people in and have some fun!
