Pop-up cards add an extra element of surprise sure to bring a smile to the receiver's face.
Greeting cards with a pop-up element are a surefire and easily achievable way to bring a smile to someone's face. Hawaiian themed or beach parties are festive occasions when a homemade pop-up card could be the perfect choice for ensuring your well-wishing message is a memorable one. With just a few simple folds, pop-up cards can be created to celebrate any occasion or special event. With minimal materials and a few minutes' time, even young crafters can learn to design and create their own pop-up cards.
Instructions
1. Cut out two separate 10-by-14-inch pieces of card stock or thick paper.
2. Fold both of the two 10-by-14-inch pieces of card stock in half. You will now have two 5-by-7-inch cards. If you want your finished card to be larger or smaller, adjust the size of your original piece of card stock. One of the 5-by-7-inch cards will serve as the exterior of the pop-up card, and one will serve as the interior.
3. Measure up 2 inches from the bottom of the folded edge of the interior card. At this point, cut a slit approximately 1 inch in length in from the folded edge of the card toward the open edges of the card.
4. Measure down 2 inches from the top of the folded edge of the interior card. At this point, cut a second slit approximately 1 inch in length in from the folded edge of the card toward the open edges of the card.
5. Push the flap of paper between the two slits into the interior of the pop-up card. The folded edge of the flap will be reversed creating the portion of your greeting card that will pop up.
6. Place the interior card inside of the exterior card, sandwiching the two together. Spread glue between the two layers, adhering them to one another. Take care not to glue the pop-up flap down; the flap should remain free from the exterior card, allowing it to pop up when the card is opened.
7. Cut out small Hawaiian-themed shapes, such as flowers, palm trees, tropical fruits, sunglasses, sandals and surfboards. Choose the elements you wish to pop out from your card and glue them to either side of the interior pop-up flap. Cutout shapes can also be purchased at most scrapbook or craft stores.
8. Decorate the rest of your card with additional cutout shapes, markers, paint and stickers.
