Leis can be all one color or multiple colors.
The giving of leis is an important Polynesian and Hawaiian custom that welcomes visitors while celebrating the vibrant flora of the islands. Scent is an essential part of the colorful garlands, as traditional leis are made with fresh flowers. However, you can create scented, colorful leis with tissue paper flowers and essential flower oil. For one lei, you will need to make 15 to 20 tissue paper flowers. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Cut out four circles that are 3 1/2 inches in diameter and four circles that are 2 1/2 inches in diameter out of tissue paper for each flower.
2. Stack the large circles, then the small circles, putting a drop of glue in the center, between each circle.
3. Cut a 38-inch long piece of heavy-duty string.
4. Thread one end of the string into a sewing needle.
5. Double-knot the other end, leaving 1 inch of excess.
6. Thread the first stack of circles onto the string, poking the needle through the center and pulling the stack down the string all the way to the knot.
7. Crumple and fluff the tissue paper circles to create a carnation-like flower.
8. Continue to add additional flowers until the lei is filled.
9. Remove the needle and tie the ends of the string together.
10. Put five drops of an essential flower oil, such as rose, lilac, lavender, hibiscus or linden blossom, into a travel-size spray bottle.
11. Fill the bottle approximately one-quarter full with water.
12. Lightly mist the lei with the scented water.
