Instructions
Desktop Publishing
1. Choose a word processor or desktop publishing program to design your flyer. Use what you have if you own one of these programs or choose one of the free options available online. It doesn't matter if you use a word processor or desktop publishing program. The basics of setting up a flyer will be the same.
2. Go to the "File" menu and choose the "New" option. This will create a default document with a one-inch page margins suitable for your flyer. Type a heading for your flyer, as this serves as the main party announcement. Suitable headings include: "Come celebrate a birthday"; "Happy Halloween Party"; and "Valentine's Day Party Event." Of course manufacturing your own title will depend on the type of party you are throwing. Drop down three spaces on your flyer and type the date, time and location of the party in about a 24 point font size.
3. Select your heading with your mouse and go to the font menu on the toolbar. Select the type of font (lettering) you want for your text from the choices on your computer. Look for something to fit the party. Comic Sans might work for a birthday party. A fancy cursive font might be appropriate for a Valentine's day party. Choose the font size from this same menu. Consider at least a 36 point font. Click the "Center" justification icon on the toolbar to center your heading.
4. Place images on the flyer to make it stand out. Go to the "Insert" menu, select the "Image" or "Picture" option, and browse to the location on your computer where your personal images exist. Click on the image you want to insert on your flyer. Select images appropriate to the party theme. For Valentine's day, you can add hearts and flowers. A birthday party flyer might include a picture of a clown, balloons or a birthday cake. Skeleton clipart, ghosts and pumpkins will work for a Halloween party. If you don't have appropriate clipart or images, you can find free images online.
5. Print your flyer by going to the "File" menu and choosing the "Print" option. Use regular 8-1/2-inch-by-11-inch paper to print the flyers you need. Purchase color paper to print your flyer in bright attention-grabbing colors.
Online Flyer Design
6. Locate an online flyer design service that doesn't cost. There are several available for free online. In some instances, you will need to create a free account to use the service. Online flyer design typically offers less freedom than what you get if you use a desktop publishing program, but they offer the benefit of being quick and easy.
7. Build your flyer by clicking through the available options on the website you choose. The Mom to Mom Chat website, for example, has a variety of choices, ranging from gardening, toys, birthday and coffee and treats flyers. Type your flyer text in the supplied field, select from the text size and color options available, then type in the important information about the party (date, time and location).
8. Select an image or background from the offered choices. Different websites offer different images. For example, the Band Flyer website provides a variety of background pictures, like a martini glass, diamonds and a crown that may be suitable for a musical event or bachelor's party. When creating an online flyer, you're often stuck with the website's limited choices. If offered the opportunity to upload your own image, select the browse option and click on the image you want in your flyer.
9. Preview your online flyer if given the opportunity. In most cases you are. If you're satisfied with the results, either save your flyer to you desktop or print it, depending upon the choices offered by the website.
