Make A Spongebob Squarepants Costume

SpongeBob SquarePants is one of the most popular children's shows on television. Loved by kids and adults alike, this animated character makes a perfect theme for a Halloween costume. This project is inexpensive, but does require some knowledge of craft painting. Some advance planning is necessary because of the paint drying time.

Instructions

1. Place a shirt board or waxed paper inside the t-shirt. Sponge the front with yellow acrylic paint. Cover heavily, but not solidly, creating a mottled effect. Let dry, then turn over and repeat on the back. Let dry completely.

2. Choose a coloring book picture of SpongeBob depicting your favorite facial expression. Make a photocopy of the picture and enlarge to a size that is appropriate for the t-shirt. Hold the front of the copy against a sunny window and on the back outline the facial details only with a charcoal pencil. Lay the copy right side up on the t-shirt. Rub the outlines with a craft stick to transfer the design.

3. Use an artist's brush and acrylic paints to color in the facial details. Let each color dry before adding another. Allow the t-shirt to dry completely when finished.

4. Cut the top and bottom off of the cardboard box for the SquarePants. For the shirt, paint the top half of the box white. For the pants, paint the bottom half brown. Paint about a 2-inch band of black around the middle of the box for the belt. Add the collar and the red tie at the center. Dry completely.

5. Have the person who is to wear the costume hold the box just below waist level. Measure from the top front of the box over their shoulder to the top back of the box. Use this measurement and cut two 2-inch-wide suspenders from the yellow felt. Attach the suspenders to the box with craft glue and let dry. You can also use a stapler for this step.

6. Put on the t-shirt. Step into the box and hang the suspenders over the shoulders.
