Make A Mermaid Scale Bra

Incorporate the historical allure of the mermaid into your costume.

Mermaids have long been a part of literature and mythology, and their presence is still seen today, whether in film or on Halloween night. If you are hoping to make a picture-perfect mermaid costume for your special party, the look begins with a shimmery scale bra. This eye-catching top can be made from an existing bra or bikini top, or you can construct the bra on your own to ensure that its fit is ideal.

Instructions

1. Measure yourself -- or an existing bikini top -- to discover the required dimensions for accommodating your bust size. Record the measurements and draw the desired design on the tracing paper.

2. Cut out the tracing paper and pin it to the lycra fabric and the bust padding. Cut out the fabric and sew it together, keeping the facing sides positioned in the way that they will be when you wear the bikini. Sew a 1-inch wide band of fabric to the outside of both triangles to finish the edges, sewing through all four layers in the process.

3. Cut the ribbon into halves and then into quarters. Trim the edges at angles to prevent the ribbon from fraying and sew the ends to the underside of the bust padding. Position the top two ribbons at the top of the bra triangles and sew the bottom ribbons to the low outer corners of the bikini top.

4. Sew the sequins onto the outside of the bikini top, beginning at the bottom row. When the bottom row is completely covered, sew sequins onto the row above it, ensuring that the upper row overlaps slightly. With each sequin, sew it on with two stitches, as this will keep all the scales laying flat. Continue until the bra top's surface is completely covered, then knot the thread's loose end on the underside.
