Liven Up A Hot Dog

A hot dog doesn't have to be plain to still be considered a hot dog.

Hot dogs are a part of American culture. However, they don't have to be lacking in toppings or sophistication to remain that "All-American" food. Read on to find creative ways to dress up your hot dog and your barbecue in a fun and imaginative fashion. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Experiment with different types of hot dogs, such as the Hawaiian dog, chili dog, Chicago dog, Italian sausage dog, perro caliente (or Mexican hot dog) or pastrami dog.

2. Determine what kind of wiener and buns would be best for these dogs. You can be as creative as you like with these two essential elements. Wieners can range from spicy to mild, long to fat, fried to boiled. Buns can be anything from a traditional hot dog bun to garlic bread, a Hawaiian sweet role, flour tortilla, sesame seed roll and more.

3. Purchase a variety of traditional toppings, such as mustard, chili, relish and white onion, as well as some more creative or "lively" toppings, like jalapenos, guacamole, chutney, bacon and different types of cheeses and deli meats.

4. Create a fun "spread" of toppings on a long table where people can help themselves to whatever they like. Post the ingredients to the three differently themed hot dogs that you chose to display to allow people to recreate these dogs for themselves if they want. If not, they can obviously mix and match whatever toppings they like.

5. Go around the room once everyone has made their dog to see what topping combinations were created.

6. Write down the ingredients of any hot dogs that were a big hit. Allow the guest to name that hot dog (or maybe you could name it after them) whatever they like. Make sure to keep the ingredients to this new hot dog on-hand for outdoor get-togethers.
