Christmas decorations give a bright and whimsical look to any yard. While wooden Christmas yard decorations can be purchased online or from local retailers, there's nothing more rewarding than making your own. For those who are less-than-gifted when it comes to artistic endeavors, you can always blow up a coloring book image at a copy shop and use it as your pattern. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Use a pencil to sketch your desired decoration onto a plywood board.
2. Use a string compass to verify that the bottom of the decoration is flat.
3. Put on your gloves, mask and eye protection and cut out the decoration with a jigsaw. Be sure to follow the shape as precisely as possible.
4. Cut out two supports for the decoration. The supports should measure three feet by six inches. Cut a notch, measuring one inch across, in the center of each support. Extend the notch 3/4 of the way down the support board, for a firm grip on the decoration.
5. Decorate the Christmas yard decoration using paint brushes and latex paint. If your decoration is going to be complex, you may want to sketch the entire decorating design with the pencil and then paint each section. Let the paint dry overnight before continuing.
6. Place the supports roughly six inches in from each side of the decoration. Secure them in place with two 6 penny nails.
7. Set out your lawn decoration. If you live in an area that receives snow, press the decoration into the snow to bury the supports. If you do not live an an area with snow, you can either bury the supports or leave them at the surface.
