Hula in the Hawaiian language simply means "dance." These beautiful dances tell cultural stories. When hula began, only religious leaders were allowed to perform the sacred dances, but over time the hula has changed and branched out. All hula dances share movements that represent natural elements. These graceful movements so clearly convey what they portray that anyone can understand parts of a hula.
Instructions
1. Learn Kahola to the right and left. First, position your right arm stretched out with your palm down and your left hand held at the center of your body with your palm down. To Kahola to the left, switch arm positions but keep palms facing down.
2. Try the tree. Put your right elbow with arm reaching up on top of the back side of your left hand. Envision swaying palm trees and enjoy!
3. Cup your hands as if holding something beautiful and precious, and you are doing a hula flower.
4. Perform a house by holding your fingertips together in front of your body's core.
5. Dance a traditional aloha. Put your arms in a wide circle like you are giving the entire world a welcome-to-paradise hug.
6. Demonstrate the beauty of the sea by turning your palms down and making undulating waves with your hands.
