Maintain A Bamboo Tiki Hut

Many people enjoy relaxing with a cold drink in a backyard hut.

A bamboo tiki hut adds a tropical island touch to any outdoor living space, whether you're in the islands or on the mainland. However, to keep your hut looking its best, you must care for it properly. A well-maintained tiki hut will last longer and look better than one that is left to weather the elements without regular cleaning or protective measures. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Treat your bamboo structure with a coat of equal parts of linseed oil and paint thinner when you get it home to moisturize the wood and preserve its integrity. Apply the mixture onto a dry cloth, rub it into the wood and allow it to sit for an hour or two. Use a clean, dry cloth to remove any excess oil and polish the wood. Reapply once or twice a year.

2. Spray the tiki hut down with a product formulated to prevent mildew, which you can find at home improvement stores. If you notice mildew forming on the tiki hut, remove it by washing it with a solution of equal parts chlorine bleach and water.

3. Wash the tiki hut with a mild detergent and warm water periodically. Removing dirt and debris from the tiki hut will keep it in pristine condition. Do this on a regular basis rather than waiting until it's a major task.

4. Situate your tiki hut away from the elements as much as possible. Place it under a shade tree rather than allowing it to bake in the sun. Choose a spot that is protected from the wind rather than placing it in an open field.

5. Store the tiki hut out of the elements during the fall and winter months. If you have room, place it in your garage or other outbuilding. Alternatively, cover the hut completely with tarps and secure them against wind, rain and snow.
