Celebrate A Luau

Celebrate a luau with festive tropical drinks.

You don't have to be in Hawaii to celebrate a luau. Hawaiian-themed decorations, pineapple- or coconut-flavored foods and Polynesian music can create a festive Hawaiian atmosphere in your own backyard. For an adult event, add grass skirts and alcoholic drinks such as Mai Tais to the mix, or include games such as the limbo or hula hoops for a younger crowd. Use a luau to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or graduation in a unique way. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Create a Hawaiian atmosphere by placing island-themed decorations with bright colors, such as fake paper palm trees, in your backyard or a large room. Decorate your tables with bright floral tablecloths and centerpieces featuring fruits such as pineapples, bananas and coconuts. Ask your guests to wear festive outfits for the occasion. Offer your female guests flowers to tuck behind their ears. Light tiki torches to keep the party going when the sun goes down, if held outside.

2. Play Hawaiian or Polynesian music. Hire a Hawaiian performer such as a hula expert, drummer or Tahitian dancer. Encourage your guests to dance and offer leis to anyone who joins the dancing. Lead your guests in games such as hula hoops and limbo. Incorporate other family friendly children's games, if the celebration is geared toward a younger crowd.

3. Serve your guests a dinner and dessert featuring a wide selection of Hawaiian-themed food such as roast pig, salmon, mango slices, coconut pudding, chocolate macadamia nut cake and pineapple upside down cake. Include American foods such as fried chicken, barbecue or salad, if your guests prefer less exotic foods. Offer beer or Mai Tais, if your luau is an event for adults.
