Carve A Tiki Pumpkin

Tiki carvings typically have pronounced grins.

A tiki carved pumpkin is an ideal complement to an autumn tiki-themed party or luau. Tiki style and decor became widespread in mainstream culture during the mid 1900s and has remained a staple of decor and parties ever since. Pumpkins offer an effective canvas for tiki carvings in that once a light has been placed inside, the glow will illuminate the ghastly and intriguing details of the tiki statue's sinister grin. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Draw an outline of the tiki face on the front of the pumpkin. The eyes and mouth are typically the prominent features of a tiki face. Draw oversize round and crescent-shaped eyes and a wide, grinning mouth. A common look for a tiki mouth is a sideways, squared off, hourglass shape.

2. Draw a triangular-shaped nose. Add wrinkle lines around each facial feature to help it to pop.

3. Create a headdress on the tiki pumpkin by drawing a line above both eyes that intersect in a point above the nose. Add decorative elements like stripes or smaller shapes above the lines to complete the headdress.

4. Carve out the main features first, such as the eyes, nose and mouth. Cut lines over the drawn wrinkle lines and cut out the headdress shapes as well.

5. Place a candle or small flashlight inside the pumpkin.

6. Stack several tiki pumpkins on top of each other to create a totem pole effect.
