Carve A Watermelon Into A Tiki Mask

A great way to liven up any pool party is to have a tiki mask on display. Unfortunately, these usually are not easy to come by. Luckily, watermelons are readily available and, when carved, make great tiki mask decorations.

Instructions

1. Choose an appropriate watermelon. An oblong-shaped one works best for the tiki mask shape. Clean the watermelon to get off any dirt or impurities.

2. Create a base for the watermelon by cutting off approximately 1/4 inch from one of the ends.

3. Draw a face on the watermelon. Use a pencil with an eraser to correct any mistakes made.

4. Make the nostrils using a melon baller. Clean up any imperfections in the nostrils using a small knife.

5. Cut out the mouth using a small paring knife. Be sure to leave behind room for the tiki mask's teeth. Then cut the teeth, leaving small spaces in between each tooth.

6. Carve the flesh out of the mouth using a spoon and the paring knife. Next, carve out the eyes using the paring knife and a spoon.

7. Decorate the watermelon tiki mask by carving channels in the watermelon skin or by carving a bone from the leftover watermelon pieces. Attach the bone with a toothpick.
